Which Military Branch Should I Join?

Hello, I am currently in high school and I am thinking about joining the military after I graduate. I would like to make serving in the military a career. I know the military can help me take college while I'm serving and things, I would go for law enforcement, in case I decided to take a break or have something to fall back on. I would really like to get into a Special Forces unit while in the military though. I know it would be very, very difficult and I probably wouldn't make it, but I'm setting that as my goal. Which branch should I join to get me into the Green Berets/Navy Seals/Delta Force the fastest and which branch do you think I would prefer in my situation? Also, would it be easier for me to get in if I started as an Officer (I would go to college before joining and go ROTC.) The reason I don't want to start in ROTC is because I am not a very good leader, I prefer taking the orders over giving them.

Lotta info already posted by others, but lemme add my 2 cents...

Biggest thing that jumped out at me was your preference for taking orders and not giving them -- that's a confidence issue that's definitely going to affect your selection into any of the military branches' elite organizations like the Army's SFs/Delta or the Navy's SEALs. You may develop/increase your confidence over time, but at some point "not a very good leader" is going to stop you dead cold at getting selected into those elite forces. They want folks with confidence and initiative that's off the scale, and confidence/initiatve go hand-in-glove with good leadership characteristics -- and being afraid to take charge in a given situation when your other leaders may have fallen won't fit well in the missions they execute. That being said...

Your very best bet is to enter the Army as an Infantryman, volunteer for jump school, and request assignment to an airborne (82nd), air assault (101st), or light infantry (10th Mountain Division or 75th Ranger Regiment) organization. If during your initial enlistment, you've found your confidence and leadership abilities have developed, and you've been promoted to an NCO, then volunteer for Ranger School and/or the SF qualification course. If, on the other hand, you found tha the Army's not for you... well thanks for serving.

It would NOT necessarily be easier for you to "get started as an officer". ROTC is four years long for someone with no prior service, and quite frankly, part of that ROTC mission is to DEVELOP your leadership skills over that four year period (that's why they call it the Reserve Officer TRAINING Corps). ROTC cadets don't necessarily get in because they HAVE good leadership qualities already, but by the time they're commissioned (become an officer), their program should have brought those skills/qualities out.

If you go OCS, the Army is going want (not necessarily require) you to have a college degree first, and when you go through basic ("boot camp"), they're going to put you in leadership positions to see how you do. If you don't do well in those leadership roles, they won't send you to OCS.

Whatever you do, good luck. And thanks for considering serving your country!

as orthodox said you SCREAM army haha,

    1. You want to make it a career- the army has more jobs then any other service, has more room for promotion and growth, and guarantees you the MOS you sign on for.

    2. Army BCT alone will give you leadership skills thats one of the biggest thing basic prepares you for. and dont listen to the other guy just cuz you dont have leadership skills doesnt mean you dont belong in the army, every person in the military is not a leader otherwise it would be very chaotic, simple as that not everyone is a leader, but if you wanna be special forces that is an extremely important skill

    3. Just joined the army and im gung ho about it, good luck kid

You should do research on all branches to see what fits you.

Just an FYI, there's a very small chance you'll be special operations.. so you should plan on a back job there.

Green Berets are US Army, Special Forces is the name (SEALs are not special forces, they are called special operations forces, as well as SF).

    SEALs are Navy.

Delta (SFOD-D) is not just Army actually, they draw from all branches.

Talk with several different recruiters and research the branches and programs they have. Only you can choose, any one that you do chose though- you can be sure you are serving your country just as much as the others. Each has it's special spots, all have special operations that can't really compare, and you cannot judge a branch by it's special ops community.

    Good luck.

Kid you are screaming Army and dont let anybody tell you otherwise.

the 2 best for law enforcement are the Marines and the Army.

Only the Navy and the Army have special forces (green beret and Delta Force = army, Navy Seals = Navy) Marines will say that their recon is spec forces but its basically the same as an army ranger and is not special forces. If you REALLY want to be Special Forces dont go 18x. the drop out rate is like 78% is even more difficult right off the street. Not to mention you have to be 20 to even try. I suggest you join as Infantry (11x) and get a couple years of soldiering and conditioning under your belt and then try when you are of age. When in the Infantry volunteer for Airborne (you can also get it in your contract) that will Accelerate your goal to become SF.

You can Join your Sr. year (with parental consent) and get 1k for every month you are in High School (only in the Army)

The Army is throwing ROTC scholarships out like crazy but you have to have great grades and apply 4 it.

The Army is the place for u. If you man enough that is. Good Luck

If you want to be an officer, your best bet is to join the Guard or Reserves so that you can complete your education goals while getting military experience. If you go active duty it's going to take you a LONG time to complete your degree. If your priority is to be SF, ask a recruiter about the 18X enlistment option for the Army. That way you can enlist directly into a SF candidate slot. Figure out what you want first and make arrangements for it.

There are best four branches of the navy: Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines (five in case you depend the Coast Guard). Each department may have it is particular elements. So, you will not move improper with both the Army or the Marines.

Here is my honest answer, if you are a better follower than you are a leader, you don't belong in the military. Get a job with the City working behind the trash truck loading trash bens in the truck.
