There are very few things that rats can't/won't eat. I have witnessed rats gnawing through tin.

Rats will eat anything. If you put them in a box they will eat there way out. If it can be bit, torn and dissolved they will eat it. They are scavengers at heart. Now if you are interested in owning a rat, paper won't be enough to feed it. They mainly will eat it if it means their freedom, or thay shred it up to make nests for their litters. I just learned that mice and rats are attracted to rabbit poop, it's like their food I guess. I hope this helps.

Rats are omnivorous and will eat just about anything.
In the wild this ranges from seeds and nuts to insects.
Urban rats will eat food scraps in rubbish and food left lying around including the wiring in your home as well.

If their teeth can penetrate it, then it will eat it. My rats even ate the food dish when they ran out of food! They got pretty fat...

No, it's not. They don't eat paper but they shred it. It allows them to build onto (or just build) a nest.
