I love Violet!
While I wouldn't classify it as too common at the moment, it's definitely on it's way up.
Here's a graph showing how many babies out of a million were given the name Violet every year for the past century. You can see that Violet fell out of favor in the 70's and 80's and is now sharply rising:

Still, it's not yet ranked in the top 200 baby names in the U.S. If it becomes popular, then your daughter will be a trendsetter instead of part of the trend.
Its recent popularity may be due to several factors. Part of it is generational name trends. Since Violet's popularity peaked about 100 years ago, most of that generation of Violets have died off so the name is starting to sound fresh again. Also, Disney used the name for a character in "The Incredibles" and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner bestowed it on their oldest daughter. Parents may also be turning to it as an alternative to Lily when they realize how popular Lily has become (currently ranked #27 and still climbing).
I don't want to discourage you from using Violet -- it's one of my absolute favorites and would be on my list if my husband hadn't vetoed it.
Just don't be surprised if you meet a few more baby Violets in the next ten years or so.

Violet is growing! It's already very popular where I live.
Three of my friends named their daughter Violet over the last 1 1/2 and many other people who have already had kids are named Violet! Wow, it's getting so over popular around here.
I really love the name though, it's something I would use but only for a middle name now that it's so popular around here.

I personally don't know of anyone that has this name or is using it. I think that Violet is still fairly unique and isn't too popular . I say go for it :)

It's a front-runner on our baby name list, but we're not even TTC officially until after Easter, so ours won't be born for a while yet, and we might change our minds anyway.
(And yes, Emmy Jo is right as usual - we keep chopping and changing between Lily and Violet as alternatives to each other!)
