Do rabbits need bedding?
I am thinking of getting a rabbit and I was doing some research but I couldn't find the answer to this question. If I have a litter box and the rabbit is "potty trained" do I need bedding/litter in the rest of the cage? can it just be a plastic bottom. (i'm not getting a wire bottom cage)
Thanks!
But what if i have a bed for it?
If I use old news paper is it ok for my rabbit to eat it? and would I shred the newspaper or just lay it flat?

They absolutely need bedding! The bedding absorbs any messes they make and neutralizes the smell of their urine. Without bedding their stool and urine can stick to their rabbit paws and cause infections. To avoid them kicking most of it out of their cage just cover the bottom of the cage in about an inch and a half of bedding, so they know there isn't much to waste.
Newspaper is awful for rabbits, the ink is toxic and they instantly will chew and eat it up. Newspaper isn't even absorbent enough to last half a day, it would be easy to just go with bedding. I buy my rabbit the biggest bag available at Petsmart which is about ten dollars and it last us a month at least. It saves you A LOT of money to buy it in large quanities, considering the small bags are only a few dollars less.
Stick with bedding, rabbits are natural burrowers and need it to remain healthy.

Yes,they do need bedding.
Its not very comfy without it,if its the cost that concerning you, then use Newspaper or as long as your rabbit doesn't eat it,old blankets/fleeces. Neutered rabbits are less likely to destroy blankets. Pine wood shavings(NOT sawdust or Cedar) is also cheap & comfy, this is what I use,but only the larger chip shavings. Other more expensive types of bedding include Aspen or Carefresh. Vetbed is also used, its like a tough variation of a fleece, designed for dogs, rabbits, cats etc,. It also looks nicer,to you with bedding.
Hope I helped! And best wishes.xxx

Well I have two mini rex's and I put bedding in each of there cages but they seem to push it all to the side and lay on the floor of the cage without it. they are potty trained and use the box but they still leave a pee or a ball laying in the bedding so I don't know that you really need it. oh I use the paper kind.
