Why are people fighting the development of renewable energy sources?

I don't understand why people seem to hate the idea of renewable energy sources. What's wrong with it? How is it hurting the economy? It'll lower the cost of production of electricity and satisfy the ever growing demand for power. Not to mention even if you don't believe in global warming what about the smog that's covering the entire LA sky. Smog is proven to cause respiratory problems like asthma. You can actually SEE it, do you think that's good for you? Even if global warming isn't real, Even if there's enough oil to last us forever what's wrong with finding a cleaner way to produce energy, I mean you can tell how dirty gas burns by looking inside the hood of your car or your tail pipe. There's no sacrifice, electric cars can move quicker than the majority of super cars for a fraction of the price including Ferraris and Lamborghinis e.g. Ariel Atom, Tesla roadster, T-Rex. I really don't see any downside.

Other sources of energy are fine, but let the free market determine what and when. We taxpayers are currently spending Billions of $$ to subsidize alternative energies that are simply not cost effective. Big Brother (Government) needs to keep their noses out of it..... they can't even balance a budget, much less tell business how to do their thing.

If Alternative energy can fly on its own.... then more power (no pun intended) to it!

The problem isn't developing renewable energy sources, the problem is the government mandating an energy source that will be more expensive that what we have now. The government has put billions of dollars into alternative energy over the last 20 years, and it is still a very small percentage of the energy we use.

Additionally, whenever we DO try to build alternative energy sources, environmentalists and politicians tell us those will hurt the environment, too. Kennedy and Kerry doesn't want a Wind Farm off Cape Cod because it would ruin his view. The Bureau of Land Management shelved a solar plant development in the southwest last year to investigate the environmental impact. Wind Turbines in Montana were blocked because it would disturb a wilderness area, and birds might fly into the turbines. Most recently Pelosi blocked a solar project in the Mojave desert due to environmental concerns.

Nuclear power is the ONLY power source that has NEVER caused loss of life, with the only exception being Chernobyl, and that is because multiple safety protocols were bypassed or ignored. No other power supply has had one 1 serious incident in 30 years of use.

Watch "Who Killed the Electric Car" if you haven't already. The only reason any new technology is prevented from exposure is the greed of the current major players in the economy.

You are absolutely right about how obvious it is to move forward with cleaner alternatives to burning fossil fuels. These HUGE oil, automotive, and other companies will do pretty much ANYTHING to kill their competition. If knowledge was given freely, the human race would be so far advanced, but alas, greed is more strongly prevalent a force. Generally, people who want peace and free knowledge also avoid causing trouble and that's why people aren't rioting in the streets over a lot of things.

Anyways, yeah, very powerful people with vast networks and high-level connections are the reason we're not seeing the dramatic, positive advancements we know are possible. It's all about keeping the market for oil and it's dependents.

An electric car doesn't need motor oil (oil), gasoline (oil), transmission fluid (oil), brake fluid (oil), radiator fluid, air filters, oil filters, brake pads/shoes, brake rotors/drums, exhaust pipes, oil pumps, brake master cylinders, traditional engines and transmissions, and about a million other products, services, and businesses that rely on gas-powered vehicles. (Like oil-change shops, auto parts stores, gas stations, emissions testing facilities)

Can you imagine the amount of sales and taxes that just wouldn't need to exist if we all drove electric cars or just did anything besides driving cars? It's a nightmare for tax/debt-slavery-driven governments and businesses. Since they have all the legal and illegal power, they aren't about to give up the injustice that they have enjoyed for so long.

Source(s): I'm an American who would like to see an end to the corruption, greed, and lies that are ruining so many lives.

Because it would mean the end of the "fat cats" way of living. The oil companies make a ton of money selling gas and oil for energy. If we developed renewable energy sources to heat our home and/or transport our vehicles, it would be the end of the "fat cats" way of living high without a care in the world.

When your utility company raises your rates, they don't care how high because there is no competition. If we had more solar power or wind power, then we would be less dependent from the utility companies. They would lower their rates to compete. I think its time that we all do our part and convert to solar or wind power and make us less dependent from the utility company while making it a safer environment for our future generation to live in.

Big oil rules our planet. Anything that threatens their profits will be eliminated or debunked. There is a guy who invented a car that ran on water. It had 13 times the power of gasoline and zero emissions. He turned up dead under questionable circumstances like so many others. Google this: - water powered car- and watch the video, or - alternative energy - and prepare to be outraged

AI strongly agree with your viewpoint. Why do people oppose? Let me share with you one thing - do we remember when Galileo (following Copernicus) first said that the earth moves around the sun?

And another story. There was a young fine couple in a country. The wife, whenever baked a hen, used to cut the corners. One day, her husband asked, why do you cut this? She said, well, I saw my mom doing this...I think it makes it tastier. They went out and asked mom. She replied, she saw her mom doing this. When the young lady went to her grand ma and asked her why - the grandma's response was – “I has a small baking tray. I used to cut the corners of the chicken so that I could fit the whole chicken in the tray.”

People, are generally scared of changes. They are so scared that they close their mind in accepting the new idea and even look at its benefits. To make people accept it, we need more marketing people and motivational analysts rather than scientific analysis. The problem lies in the consumers minds, not in the product itself.

The same reason why one of my ancestors opposed tractors and wanted horses instead.

It is called CONSERVATISM and in our fast changing world, especially in the field of technology it is simply the wrong attitude to have.

Almost all major developments are the result of a very limited number of people which were much more creative and forward looking than their peers.

If you want an exemple of conservatism, go to the website of the "Heritage Foundation" which even opposes energy efficiency. Yes they oppose the maximization of economic benefits per unit of resources consummed.
