He was a man's man and she was a dutiful wife.
He didn't refrain from having sex while he was on the long journey home (calypso,etc) Penelope would deliberatley pull the threads out of her tapestry each night so that she could delay marrying again and wait for Odysseus. She was faithful and loyal until his return.

Well...
Odysseus was a warrior and hero who was off at war and was exiled. His pain was being away from his wife, and her pain was not knowing where her husband was. Penelope stayed true to her husband while he was away. and made sure it was really him when he came home.
