This is a hard question to answer because you have so many choices.

First you should clearly list exactly what you want to accomplish. Many times I am requested to setup a Server and Network but when I sit down with the customer I find out that they really don’t need all that. Most people simply want to network there computers to share files and an internet connection. To do that you don’t need a server.

If you truly do need a server the next thing is to think about your budget. Knowing your exact needs will help here. If you simply need a “File” server, you don’t need to go out and buy the most powerful processor but you will want to get fast larger hard drives.

Unfortunately there are no simple answers to this question without a lot more information. If you tell me more I would be happy to council you on what products and software you may need if any. Also take a look at Microsoft’s website, they are now offering a “Home” server software package that is much cheaper than the true Server 2003 or Server 2008, there are also some free Linux server software you may look into but the instillation and setup is harder.

    Good luck

    Mike
