My landlord moved us into an apartment with a serious bedbug situation. What now?

My landlord is as negligent as they come. Our apartment is the only one with bedugs and he promised to move us out, and now he will not return calls. I have a newborn, and My brother who came to visit has over 24 bites all over his face and neck, and my fiance and I get bit all th time. We never even thought bedbugs were real until we got here! When we told him, he did not return our calls for two weeks and we had to call and pretend to be strangers that wanted to rent a new apartment to get a one on one with him! I have bites in my face, back and feet. He even saw my newborn and he still will not return my calls. What a nightmare! Can anyone reccomend a good lawyer in Illinois!?

Update:

Hello, to the posters that claim this is my problem,

There was an old couch here that we moved out. I have never seen a bedbug in my life, and I wish I had, then I would have known to leave immediately. In illinois there are multiple class action lawsuits against landlords with negligent attitudes like yours. Namely presidential towers where the residents won 50k each. I have a baby. Bedbugs are not and never were an option.

Update 2:

Wow. There are no potential warren buffets here. How is an insect that spreads rapidly from unit to unit and can live for 18 months without food a tenant issue? They cause hundreds of thousands in property damage and in IL tenants can legally refuse rent until the problem is resolved. How did I bring them here when I did not even have furniture or many clothes for that matter when I moved in?

What a bad landlord! I'm sorry: I don't live in Illinois but when you do have a lawyer make sure the phone calls are your evidence and something like a dead bedbug AND your bite marks is also handed to the lawyer for evidence. I wish you luck! :]

Save your money. Bedbugs are a TENANT issue, not a landlord issue. In nearly all cases, bedbugs are brought to the unit by the tenants themselves, or by their guests. Since that is the case, it's your problem to rid yourselves of them.

Start searching the internet for the appropriate products and methods to eliminate them.

Call your local health department... you may not need a lawyer. They can help you dispute this with your landlord, get the situation remedied, and may even give him a fine or get you out of your lease.... You could try the Illinois Department of Public Health 217-782-5830. If nothing else, they should be able to direct you to the right place to call.

    Good luck!

Now you don't say whether the apartment was furnished or not. So there is no way to say whether you brought the bedbugs into the apartment. Considering, its only your apartment. sounds like you caused the issue and you need to be the one to fix the problem.

whether your landlord ought to pass in and evict you devoid of appropriate reason, I heavily doubt he/she might. that must be thoroughly immoral and unjust. as nicely, you're paying hire for the biggest room interior the construction, and that's a considerable source of earnings to them. i in my opinion do no longer think of you have something to be irritating approximately.
