What does your lease say?
Most of the time, a lease that is casually referred to as a "one year lease" actually specifies 12 full months, plus the partial month when you first move in. If that's the case, then your lease runs through the end of April 2009 and therefore you must pay the rent
If your lease actually ends on April 5th 2009, then you can't be forced to pay for the full month. However, even though your lease expires, you're still required to give 30 days written notice of your intent to vacate. This informs the landlord that you won't be renewing your lease so he can begin searching for a new tenant. You have to pay rent for at least 30 days from when you gave this notice even if you move out before then.

As Smart... says, what does your lease say?
Since you moved in on the 5th, does your lease end on March 31 or April 30? If it ends on April 30, then you owe up until April 30. No rip-off involved.

No it is not a rip off if it was necessary for you to give 30 days notice and you didn't. If you did then yes it is wrong.

It's not a ripoff. You stupidly assumed that you didn't need to give notice that you were leaving because your lease was expiring. It's YOUR error, not theirs. Pay up.
