Jim Morrison brought the whole concept of 'putting on a show' and paved the way for the 'bad boy rocker' image. Like him or not.

Kurt Cobain brought to light some very popular rockers are also in it for the fans and not for corporate profit. His commiting suicide probably has to more with bi-polar or depressive behavior issues and not anything else, which is a very important social issue today.

They are all greats for very different reasons, and belong in the legendary status of rock.

The music we all listen to would be the exact same today if Cobain and Morrison had never been born. Neither of them should even be in the discussion. They were just along for the ride, not transformational figures the way Hendrix and Lennon were. The decision really is between Lennon, McCartney, Hendrix, Dylan, & Presley. If any one of those five men had not existed, Rock music would be completely different today.

Well, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon and Jim Morrison are famous for their music, and even if Kurt Cobain is my favorite from your list and also famous for his music, he is more famous for commiting suicide.

Hendrix had significant influence on guitar playing and permanently changed music style. The Beatles (not John alone) also had a huge influence. I would lean to Hendrix as being more legendary from your choices.

Morrison and Cobain did not have anywhere close to the same influence as the others here, or several others that you didn't name.

My personal favorite is Cobain. But they're all legends not only for dying before their time but for their amazing music with has shaped all succeeding generations. I have to say that their deaths have probably made them even more legendary.
