Remodel: Master Bath - tub or shower?

Just bought a house... and we are putting in a master bath. We are working w/ limited space... and wondering whether it's a better investment to put in a tub (jacuzzi, regular?!) or Tiled in Shower w/ Hanging Glass? Opinions wanted!

In a master suite a shower is the better return for value. While a garden tub or jet tub is expected as well, if you dont' have the space, then a beautiful shower with multiple jets and good tiling is worth a lot. Adults do not need tubs and they are rarely used in master suites. Trust me. We have had many fabulous master bath suites and we have used the tubs minimally. The shower is used every day and should be the top of the line. Go with your best shower you can afford and make it special. You won't miss the tub with your limited space and neither will future buyers.

Hi.........I just did one for my son and got a 4x6 tub and a 3x3 shower and a toilet and corner vanity into a 7.5 x11.5 space, a nice window above the tub........storage above the toilet, a normal vanity, with doors and drawers and yet a makeup area with drawers coming out of the corner. And one step up to the tub removes so as to get at the motor of the jet tub if necessary. It has nice heat, lighting, ventilation, and yet it also has light via the window. And I could have got a sky lite over the tub........but didn't in order to save a little money for him. For your home I would always go with the shower.........I have had so many older people who would like to walk in a shower with handicap bars and be able to sit once they get in.........so look ahead. Put the backing(blocking) in the walls so that someone can do exactly that. It's really a great caring idea. Good luck and have fun.........And yes I was raised with a tub........but I will always go with a shower first now.

A friend did this in his condo (took the tub out and put in a spacious glass enclosed shower).

His realtor advised against it because if he decided to sell the unit down the line, not having a tub could easily be a deal breaker, but since he wasn't planning on selling any time soon (if at all) the large shower would be better for his lifestyle.

I can tell you though, months later he threw out his back and was wishing he had a hot bath to soak in.

We wanted to update or master bath. Space is not the issue. We tried Premium tub/ shower quotes- Jacuzzi etc. None of them will give U a $ figure nor. Will do the ENTIRE job! .. The bottom line is, Do it your self un less it does not matter how much it will costs!!!!

In my opinion, if you have another bathroom with a full tub, then go with the tiled shower and hanging glass because the room is small. That way, you might be able to fit-in a bigger vanity.

In my opinion a shower is better. It is more useful and a quick in and out in the morning. A tub might be more relaxing, but the shower is more practical.

baths and kitchens sell the house. So,do your best to make that bath look for 100 %.

Put the tile in the bath, hanging glass would look good too, choose some light colors to make the space look bigger, some beautiful fixtures,a nice mirror,a vanity and a jacuzzi and you're good to go.

I think a shower is way more functional. Who has time to soak in a tub anymore?

  • if you put in stand-up shower this will allow you to more access to other places in your bath, plus bathtubs are over rated and have little use unless you have babies
