State Tax question: NY Resident, Worked in WY... No state tax showed up on W2?

I am a New York State resident (have my drivers license and bank account here), but in May of '08 I quit the job I had from Jan-May in NY and I moved to Wyoming to work at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming for the summer season. This was just a seasonal contract job, and in October I left the park, lived in Canada for a month, briefly visited NY, and then travelled the country, not holding any other jobs while doing so.

When I received my W2 from Yellowstone, there is no amount or information in any of the state tax boxes.

My first question would be, as a seasonal employee, do I need to file seperate NY/WY partial resident state tax forms? Or was I still legally a resident of NY the entire time, and in that case, what shold I do about the W2 from Yellowstone?

And, why didn't sny state tax show up on the Yellowstone W2? What does that mean and what should I do?

Since you never changed your residency status, you are a full year NY resident. You would file a NY resident return with all your income (including that from Yellowstone) on it.

There was no state withholding because WY does not have a state income tax. They are not required to withhold NY tax because they have no nexus in NY.

State earnings tax is confusing. in case you're able to do the allowances on the W-4 only top, you will possibly have precisely the quantity due withheld and does not get the two a refund or a stability due. then you definately might only upload the quantity instruct on your itemized deductions and be achieved with it. actually, you will the two get a refund or owe. in case you get a refund, the refund is shown on the subsequent twelve months's tax return as earnings (1040, line 10). in case you owe, the extra money you pay is an extra itemized deduction interior of right here twelve months (eg, owe on 2009, deduct it on 2010).
