Am I getting hosed on my tune up?
I have a 2000 Chevy Astro that needs a tune-up. Spark plugs, and replace and remove distributor cap... I had to pay $99.99 to find out why my check engine light was on...and now they gave me the cost of
$350.00.plus tax. That comes to $450+ for a tune up. What should I do?? How urgent is this tune-up, I'm really low on cash...can I wait a couple of weeks before I cough up this kind of money
That $450 DIDN'T even include the wires. Im looking it my bill right now. They want $200 for the plugs, w/labor, $150 for the cap and rotor, w/labor, and 196 for the wire set. This didnt even include any filters. So really, to get a full tune up it would have costed me more. What they should have told me, so I know how much I was getting screwed, was let me know that $450 dollars was just in labor. The actual parts and things were only $150.

their basically over charging you really bad on this one,the 99 diagnoses fee is a little to much, because this should be included with the tune up fee not to be that much either,i haven't ever charged that much for any tune up on any dodge or any other kind of car for that matter, you need to find another shop, you can get that done for a lot less money, its going to take them about 2 hours tops to do this one,so yes your being charged way too much,an astro van isn't that hard to work on that they need to charge this much in labor,if it needs it real bad, find another shop to do this or talk to them about the amount they are going to charge for doing it,good luck.

Honestly the plugs are a pain, I just attempted it on a 2001 Astro and could only pull 3. That is jacking up the car on each side, pulling the lower dash and dog house and busting my knuckles with every socket extension I had. 4 hours later the one impossible plug wire may not be snapped in for certain as all I could do was set a socket on it and push it forget about getting it out. I gave up on the back end. I assume allot of people have a rough idle and are getting there money took on this job cause its worth more than 200. Any mechanic that can pull them would be proud to show them to you. The diagnostic fee is about right considering If they found a problem ranges from 50-100. Autozone will run your engine code for free! Should have just said tune her up if that didn't cover it then diagnose it let that be a 100 dollar lesson.
A (high mileage tune up) transmission flush and filter, radiator flush, rear end serviced, points greased, oil changed, Fluids toped off, plugs replaced, plug wires, distributer cap, replace vacuum lines, passenger motor mount, Brake pads , All filters Gas, air, oil, MAF sensors cleaned, New tires and something you need like a fuel regulator or spider injector to have that beast running another 6 strong years will cost you 3500-4000 so don't get bent on 600-700 dollar a year maintenance or excessive diagnostic fees just cough it up if its around 160k and you will be driving it until 260k. (THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE CAR JUST ONE THAT WILL HAUNT YOU LATER) The 4.3 is good for it as there are allot of taken care of Astros in the 250k club and I am almost there my self.

Parts and Labor on you Astro, Van right? Well having worked at a dealer in Calif that price isn't to far off, even though you are asking in the Dodge section. How bad is the van ruining? How long has the light been on? are you having any running problems? if not you could let it go but things could get worse and cost even more money later on. Its really up to you. If it were me I wouldn't let it go, but then I do my maintenance on a regular scheduled basis and plan for it. Why? cause I don't want to get stuck out in the middle of no where with my kids. That has happened before and I don't plan on it happening again so I lessin my risk as much as possible even if the wife complains, but then again she can walk too

No they are screwing you over big time. You can go to www.autozone.com you could get all the parts you need for a little over $150 to may $200 to do your tune up. You would be far cheaper buying the parts and doing it yourself. The spark plugs alone if you bought the most expensive autozone has would only be $48 not including tax though, for all 6 of them for your engine. The wireset, (spark plug wires) would be $49.99 if you bought the most expensive that they offer. Distributor cap, and rotor cap do not cost much either. Their all simple to replace. If its the spark plug wires you are worried about, remove one wire, remove the plug it was connected to, put in a new plug, attach the new wire. But do it one at a time. So you dont mix them up. You will save a lot more money if you can do this yourself or get someone in your family or maybe a friend to do it for you. $99.99 for diagnostics is highway robbery considering most any other shop will do that for $50-$60. Actually you could have taken your van to oreillys or autozone and gotten to scan it to see why your check engine light was on for free. Hell, if you were near Houston or in Houston if you got the parts I would come to do your tune up for you myself. Thats how outraged I am at what this "shop" is asking you to pay. I have been in your shoes before my friend.
Source(s): www.autozone.com check the prices for your parts here and compare them to what that shop wants for them. They are wanting almost 300% mark up for your wireset. The shop you went to is charging almost 300% mark up, thought I would clarify that. - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

Well considering I can do the tune up on an astro van (and have done one) for less than $50.00 I would say yes your being screwed. You can do the tune up yourself as long as you know what your doing. Your check engine light on a 1999 astro could be on for a couple reasons: emissions related or engine performance related. I have never heard of anyone paying $100.00 for a diagnostic when they can go to advance auto parts and have the same thing done for FREE!!! as far as how long to wait depends on whether or not its running differently, such as if its running rough or stalling, if its using more gas than normal, etc. and quite personally I wouldnt go back to that shop, they know how to talk their way into your wallet and therefore shouldnt be trusted. if the van is running fine but just has the light on then yes you can wait a little while until you have more money, but when your ready, just go to your local O'Reilly Auto Parts, or Advance Auto and buy a book and some tools and your tune up stuff and tackle it on a weekend afternoon, it will make for a great project and you will learn alot and thank yourself later for all the money you saved!!!

You're either getting screwed or there are other things that need to be done that is not listed in your posting. I can't imaging being charged that much just to change the spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor. If that is literally all that they will do for that much, laugh and find another place. That is really basic as one can get, and a good place to start if you thought of doing it on your own.

My coworker did his own tune up on his wife's '95 Astro van, he said never again. This was the 4.3 engine where the distributor is against the firewall and one of the plugs is virtually impossible to get too he said. So the labor charges may be about right.
$99.99 for a check engine light is way out of line though.

I highly recommend using www.automd.com and getting a price on stealership, local shop and diy. Good starting point for everyone. Just put in your vehicle make and info, put in your zip code and the service you want done. . that's all you do. . . and its free!
