Isn't this, one of the best quotes describing both god and religion you've ever read?
"The most preposterous notion that H. sapiens has ever dreamed up is that the Lord God of Creation, Shaper and Ruler of all the Universes, wants the saccharine adoration of His creatures, can be swayed by their prayers, and becomes petulant if He does not receive this flattery. Yet this absurd fantasy, without a shred of evidence to bolster it, pays all the expenses of the oldest, largest, and least productive industry in all history."
10 points goes to the first person who can tell us who wrote it.
But really, does it get any more accurate than that?
Bleh got it first!
Now, what novel?

Yet this absurd fantasy, without a shred of evidence to bolster it, pays all the expenses of the oldest, largest, and least productive industry in all history. The second most preposterous notion is that copulation is inherently sinful".

Heinlein's "For Us The Living"?
The gods of the past were just the same, petulant, selfish, sucking up praise, prayers and bloody sacrifices, and often forgetting to do what they were asked to do in the first place. One of the things the Christian god has inherited from all the previous gods is that he sometimes "answers" your prayers and sometimes doesn't, and Christians accept that as part of His creepy arbitrary personality.

God is a loving, caring, and forgiving person. He promises to take your soul to a beautiful place after you have passed, where you will be happy for an eternity and smile and laugh!
Trouble is...if you anger him, or go against his will in any way, he becomes angry with you, and condemns you to HELL where you will burn and burn and suffer and get full blown AIDS 34 times over while being the Devil's own personal dil**.
"But he loves you!" :D
Very reasonable person if you ask me, i heard he forgives you though, if you just confess to your sins. Then all is forgiven and you may prance in the prairies of His kingdom.
Heaven must not at all be that good, after all there aren't any smiles or laughing in heaven. Why? Because humor originates from sadness or somebody else' misfortunes, and apparently there isn't neither sadness or troubles in heaven.
Good Quote!

Definitely not one of the best.
Here's a better one: "Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world." James 1:27
Aiding widows and orphans, and attempting to make yourself a better person. How's that for productivity?

Lazarus Long said it.
It was written by Robert Henlien.
And it is wrong. It is the second oldest industry.
