Canisters are totally worth it, especially eheim classics. They are amazingly efficient and quiet. They are the only canister filters where the flow rates are measured while the canister is full, every other canister filter measures the flow rate while the canister is empty (to pump up the number since media makes the flow slower). The design pulls water in from the bottom of the filter, through the top so it is impossible for the filter to have any bypass (water not going through the media)-magnums, fluvals, cascades and many other filters don't do this. It is also very reliable and almost completely silent (you have to feel the canister to tell it is on). Overall it is my favorite filter. There are other eheim models that are way more expensive, mostly because they ofter special features like autopriming and heating. These features are great but not necessary in my opinion (unless you have the cash for it).

Cannister filters are good, because they are generally bigger, have more media and hide themselves in a cupboard under the tank.
This makes them ideal for larger tanks with big messy fish.
Do you need one? Depends....
If you current filter is keeping the water clear and ammonia / nitrite levels are zero, then you aren't really going to gain anything. The tank may look tidier and you wont have to clean the bigger filter as often, but thats about it.
But if you have a big tank / messy fish and you current filters are struggling, then upgrade to a cannister for sure.
All filters work the same, they pump water through some sort of media. The type of media, size of the pump, size of the filter and where it sits may be different, but they all so the same basic thing. It's just that a bigger filter, that pumps more water through more filter media is going to be better.

If the water has been getting cloudier possibly you want a extra physically powerful tank, I even have some turtles and that grew to become into the situation for me.From my adventure the turtle filters seem to do a extra constructive activity than the fish ones i attempted,I even tried fish filters for plenty better tanks and the uniqueness turtle one labored extra constructive, yet it is likewise do to the bigger tank as a results of fact the turtle would not get the great tank airborne dirt and dust merely factors( the situation with the smaller tank grew to become into it grew to become into making it grimy in a smaller section have been it unfold around the section speedier than the filter out could desire to sift by using it )

if you have anything bigger then a 10 gallon tank i recommend a canister filter. canisters are way more cost effective. theres no need to buy a filter pad every month. a canister filter combines all 3 methods of filtration. chemical, biological, mechanical. it makes your tank crystal clear. every 3 months or so you open it up and change out a filter pad and rinse your carbon. other then that there is no maintance and no extra cleaning needed.
good luck hope this helps

I love mine! i have it in my 120G a side with the old Cling of the back one pretty much just to put oxygen in the water. They are very quite not hard to clean i would definitely go with one! they usually are more expensive up front though. Also like i said before the only problem is you don't get any oxygen into the water with them. so make sure you ether have an air stone or some type of way to get oxygen in the water. WATCH OUT FOR YOU FISH AT THE TOP OF THE FISH TANK.
