I thought tooth extractions didn't hurt?

Hi people, i went to the dentist yesterday to have one of my bottom third molars extracted, i didn't really think much of it because i read what the procedure was like on here before i went and everyone said its painless, the dentist had to numb my gum about 10 times and she used 2 diff kinds of anasthetic yet when she started pulling the tooth, twisting it etc it felt like someone had just stabbed my gums and was twisting the knife, worst pain ive ever experienced but because it hurt so bad and she almost had it out by then i just let her get on with it so she didn't need to start again, after the injections the dentist only waited about 2 minutes before starting, my gums felt really numb but maybe she didnt wait long enough? anyway NEVER AGAIN, i would rather have a constant toothache then go through that again.

Update:

The needles didn't hurt at all, i didn't feel them, it only hurt when my tooth was being pulled :(

Sounds like you had an infection in that tooth. Normally it won't hurt, but if there is any infection present that novacaine will not work at all not matter how many shots they give you. I suggest taking anitbiotics before the next tooth pull.

Sounds like they should have waited a bit longer.... my dentist usually waits 5 minutes or more before pulling a tooth after numbing it.

I have infrequently had tooth extractions and never felt anything but some pressure... until the novocaine wore off. Does sound like they either didn't wait long enough, or did not put the shots in the right place.

    I am sorry you hurt.

    did that happen to you?:

when i had 6 of my teeth extracted it didn't hurt

my dentist would stick a needle in my gum to make it numb

    and then i couldn't feel a thing

    except the needle part

and i'm just like sitting there and then they say, "do you want to see your tooth" and i'm like "you pulled out my tooth?"

but i have a question: "was it an adult tooth, and was it wiggly?"

Maybe it's just your dentist. I got 2 teeth removed, but the 1st one was horrible, so then my mom swicthed me to a different dentist, and I got the 2nd one removed, and it took half the time than the other dentist, and it didn't hurt as much as the other dentist.

my dentist waits 10 min before taking my tooth out

I don't know who is more daft - people for saying it doesn't hurt or you for believing them.

Having a tooth out is basically taking away a piece of your body - are you trying to tell me that an amputation is painless??

Consider it lesson learned my friend!!
