A couple of years ago one of my dogs got sprayed by a skunk. I did all the stuff with tomato juice, etc, but it didn't work. A friend told me to spray him with Febreeze. Guess what? The stuff works. It took out every trace of the smell. It is not harmful and has no negative side effects. It will do the trick for your dog too. Good luck. I would love to hear from you when you try this.

You need to stop bathing him every other day. That can create skin problems and add to the odor. It may be his anal glands that are infected/impacted and need expressing or he may have an ear infection, skin infection or needs a dental cleaning. All of these can cause unpleasant odors that will not go away unless it's treated.
Please take him to your vet and have these things checked.
I used to have a Chow and his odor would enter the room before he did. There was nothing wrong with him - it was just his body odor. If your dog checks fine at the vet, then it may just be the way he smells.

Smells come from anal glands, skin conditions and the food caked around their faces. Teeth issues can also cause him to smell.
Bathing him every other day is really bad for him you are stripping the oils out of his coat..
Have his anal glands checked by the vet or a groomer,
It might be wise to have a vet check him for any medical problems
Wipe his face off after he drinks or eats.
Make sure you are feeding him a high quality dog food and nothing from the grocery store.
add: It helps to keep the hair around his private areas shaved close.

It's Shih Tzu. If your dog is smelling terrible and you have to wash it every other day, why haven't you taken the poor thing to the vet's. There is obviously some sort of health issue. It's really bad to wash a dog this much.

Ok, part of the problem is the over bathing. Bathe him only once a month. His oil glands are going into overdrive. Dogs are going to have a scent to them. Take him to a vet to get to the bottom of the problem. He might have food allergies or something like that. Try foods without corn. As for your wife, she may not be all that gung ho about dogs, and may well complain of the "smell" forevermore.

I have a pug who smells bad as well.
If you feed it bad food, she might smell from this. I feed my dogs Nutro Chicken, rice and oatmeal. this has cut down on her smell. If I fed her Purina 1, or kibbles and bits, etc she stunk SO bad.
Also washing your dog too much will take away their natural oils. I bathe my dogs once every 2 weeks with Nuvet Oatmeal shampoo. The scent is light and the oatmeal does wonders for their skin. They also make a spray that helps between washes, but I have never had to use it.

Take him to a vet.
If the smell is coming from his ears he may have an infection. If it's coming from his mouth he needs dental care. If it's his butt he needs his anal glands expressed. Bathing dogs that often is bad for them.
Also poor quality food can cause an odor. Our pets need quality food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. "Vet approved" means they have a vet on staff to approve their product. In other words, someone paid to approve it. Same with foods most vets recommend. Salesmen "gift" vets then the vet recommends the food. Most vets are not nutritionists! Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient Wellness, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. This breed usually does'nt smell. It sounds like he has a skin allergy and that can make him stinky. You can change the food to a good quality food,no grains or by products..Halo,Wellness,Innova and Solid Gold a few very good choices.Try putting a fish oil capsule that you pop with a pin and squirt on his food, that should help with his coat and hopefully his smell

First off, you can't wash him every day..you'll strip his skin of natural oils. Check his ears...I've got a hunch that may be where the smell is coming from. Dogs with long floppy ears have to have their ears cleaned regularly as they get no airflow to keep them from retaining water and getting smelly. Also, he may need the hair plucked from his ears to allow airflow. Contact your local groomer for this...or research on the internet how it's done. Good Luck!

Has he been neutered? Does he need his anal glands emptying?
It could be a hormonal smell. Phone the vet & see what he suggests the poor little guy needs all the help he can get. too many baths remove the oils from the skin so be careful.
