actually cutting is a form of deliberate self-harm. it is quite common. nearly 35% of adolescents have harmed themselves at least once.
There are many reasons for self harm, but the most common reason is internal emotional regulation. It can relieve stress or tension. It can also decrease dissociative symptoms, it makes them feel something. It creates a form of control in one's life, when everything seems to be breaking down, it allows a way to regain control. Paradoxically, self harm can be used to prevent suicide.
Personally, why i cut was to relieve tension that was building up. It was a quick high, and an easy way to make myself feel better.
Often cutting, or any other form of self harm, is an addiction. You really get to a point where you cant help yourself. It is the only thing that you can think about and you know that it is what is going to get you through your day.
In the end there are no benefits to cutting. it ruins lives and saves them.

Many cutters were sexually abused when they were little children. They're full of shame, fear, guilt and rage. A little child can't process those feelings. They get a feeling of release from those repressed feelings when they cut their skin. It's not an effective, long lasting relief so they do it again and again. It's sad because cutters are innocent and don't deserve hurt from anyone, even themselves. When they cut, at least they are controlling their pain. Their lives are mostly about pain, and when they cut, they have control of it. They feel guilty about their sexuality because they were molested, cutting can be a substitute for sexual release. They want to avoid sexual release because they feel guilty about their sexual feelings. Almost all molested children feel guilt and shame about their sexual feelings.

reasons why someone might cut: -liking pain -clinging to pain because you feel nothing else - feel over/under-stimulated -hate self & its like you only deserve to be hurt -prefer physical pain vs. emotional pain -get your mind off emotional pain -relieve anger & bad feelings- (expression) -feel better from seeing your blood run -wish to be hurt, no one else understands (misunderstood masochist) -pain does something to nerves that somehow creates a kind of "high"
