My Girlfriend Gets Frequent UTIs. Why?

My girlfriend gets very frequent UTIs. She used to get them about once every three months, but here recently it has been very often? We have gone to doctors but they don't say very much. I need help. I hate seeing her in pain. She has a very STRONG burning in the vagina. She urinates A LOT during and when she does the pain becomes almost intolerable.

What can we do to prevent this? And why are they happening so often, and more often lately? And comments would be greatly appreciated.

Update:

Okay... We are both actually VERY clean. We are clean freaks. She doesn't really hold it either.

She needs to see a urologist. There are various possible causes, and if something shows up they can fix it, and if not they can usually put her on preventive low dose antibiotics. There are many possibilities that are nobody's fault if she's gone through the very basic instructions they always give you about water and cleanliness. It could be a structural issue, it could be something else that is misdiagnosed, it could be a million things - and it could simply be a little thing she doesn't happen to be good at fighting off.

I used to go to the ER every 2 months or so. I haven't gotten one since. A good one will do some annoying tests, but it's worth it. At the 3rd one in a year, they'll usually start advising you see a specialist... with it getting to be more often than every 3 months? She should have seen one a while back.

While regular doctors gave me a lot of advice, after talking to urologists, I've been told most of it will not really help a lot of people. Cranberry juice isn't bad - but it's no miracle. Make sure she stays hydrated, and clean (perhaps get those moist feminine wipes - but no harsh chemicals or douches), and that you are clean too. Watch for sources of contamination or patterns to her illness (does it follow anything? - time with you?, time away from the house?, weekends slacking inside, certain foods?, latex exposure?, spermacide exposure?). That may not enable you to avoid it, but it's another clue for the specialist.

If she gets sick before she gets an appointment, make SURE they do a full culture - the urologist will appreciate the extra information and it will help them track down the issue. You should also help her check with clinics and doctors she has gone to with the UTIs and ask for any records and the full results of any cultures done for her urologist to see.

I asked for a female urologist, and they did understand. If that makes her more comfortable, ask. They know that might make someone more comfortable with these sorts of procedures, and while they do seem to be a little less common, they are out there, and will probably see this sort of problem more (or at least can identify with it a bit more).

I'm going through the same problem as your girlfriend. apart from the usual preventative actions she could try asking for a preventative antibiotic. It's not a cure but it does help, where i was getting 1 almost every month i went on preventative antibiotics which is basically a low dose antibiotic pill taken once daily and i didn't get one for almost 6 months. To get to the bottom of the problem she should ask to be refered to a Urologist. As for the no kids thing-my doctors have told me that it would not be good to become pregnant as most antibiotics are bad for you when pregnant and after natural child birth the changes that occur downstairs can make a women more prone to utis apart from that i've never been told that i'd never be able to have kids, just that i should sort this problem out before taking on more stress! I'd really like to know how things turn out as i'm still trying to figure out how to stop mine. Good luck!

The most important thing to avoid UTI's for a woman is to urinate after intercourse within 30-50 minutes if possible. This is because body fluids and bacterias are mixed during sex and if she doesn't flush them out by urinating, they can colonize. The vagina has a pH perfectly suitable for the rapid growth of bacteria, and the environment down there is warm and moist. The reason women get them more often than men is because (I'll use the phrase my microbiology professor used) "It's easier to wipe off than it is to wash out". The internal female urethra makes it harder to rid the body of these bacterias.

Be sure she gets control of these UTI's. If they happen frequently, they can very possibly travel up the ureters and into the kidneys where infection can be deadly.

  • Could be that she doesnt use the restroom when she feels the need to and holds it when she should have. Im not saying your both dirty but maybe if you are having sex your not cleaning yourselves up down there often enough. Or if she drinks or eats things with lots of sugar. Those could be things that could be contributing

Make sure your "peeter" is clean when you have sex... She needs a shower like every day, change panties every day and most important wipe from front to BACK!. Drink plenty of water daily.. Don't have anal sex then vaginal sex with out washing your "junk" off that's really gross. JUst keep her kitty clean and well cared for..Especially with the wiping front to back issue
