HOW DO I GET RID OF THIS URINE SMELL?

My bunnies are placed in their "house" in the mud room. They are litter box trained but the room smells like bunny urine. I have the Air Wick automatic air freshener spray in the room spraying every 9 minutes but it doesn't seem to help the smell. Any other suggestions? (I would place them in the garage but its too cold)......

Update:

Thank you all! Great answers!!!!!!!

If your rabbits aren't neutered or spayed their urine will have a stronger odor. And if they aren't neutered/spayed and you have a male/female you run the risk of babies.

What we do and it works great is to line a cat litter box with several layers of newspaper and top with hay. The hay seems to absorb the smell. I clean the boxes every 1 1/2 days - dump out everything and clean the litter box with a vinegar & water solution. You can also use that to spot clean. There are other litter materials you can use; just don't use cat clumping litter. Here are some tips on the litterbox:

I wouldn't use the air freshner at all or at least that often.

    Good luck.

We have 3 bunnies so I can relate. Make sure they are drinking enough water so the urine will be more dilute and less foul smelling. Also, bunnies sometimes pee outside the sides of the cage if there is no urine guard. The urine can get on the floor. The suggestion of vinegar might be good, but be careful since it is getting warmer. Vinegar attracts gnats and fruit flies--this is their primary diet--so you might get an infestation of them and their larvae if you use it inside the rabbit cage, Yuck.

The urine of male rabbits is naturally much stronger than females (not sure which you have). I think the only way of dealing with this if you have a male is to have him neutered. Also, there are some odor reducing litters out there like Carefresh litter for rabbits. One more suggestion. Since it's getting warmer, is it possible to put the rabbits outside in a hutch?

Air fresheners are harsh on a rabbit's sensitive resp. system. If you can, remove this item from the room. You can place baking soda based air freshener in there instead.

The amonia in urine is what smells and in order to keep that odor at bay, you must be sure to clean their home and litter box very often. Hot water and vinegar is good because vinegar breaks down the amonia.

My litter boxes are cleaned four times a week with the soiled litter being freshened daily. My cages are cleaned every two days during the week and soiled bedding removed daily.

    Best wishes,

You could try a spray of 1:1 white vinegar and water. The acidity neutralizes ammonia and cuts the smell plus it's nontoxic so you can spray the cage.

Straight vinegar is also a great disinfectent. Just as good as bleach.

You could also mix baking soda in the litter.

Make sure you keep up with the litter box and are cleaning it on a regular basis. Also they are probably urinating on the floor as well. Have the floor cleaned and clean with bleach that always take out urine smell. Also go to you local pet store and see what the might suggest.

I have the same problem so will be interested in other answers! I wonder if burning scented candles/incense sticks may be strong enough to deal with the odour.

I use sprays, but the effect is not long lasting.

    Good luck.

Sounds like they need to get neutered. When they reach maturity, their pee starts to really smell very bad. Neutering them totally fixes the problem.
