Haha interesting question! I think classical music is kind of a new endeavor for these people, and since I do my best to look on the bright side of things, I'm happy BL at least has them interested.

    To quote "The Anglerfish Song":

'Cause you can't fear the night

If you've lived your whole life without light

And you can't hate the dish

If you've only ever eaten fish

    And you can' feel alone

If it's all you've ever known

Yes the deep-sea anglerfish has no reason to be happy

But it has no freakin' idea

    what else to be.

I don't necessarily consider non-classical music 'crap' (though some of it is), but instead to quote my piano teacher, "Everything else is just dessert--fluffy, and nice, but it doesn't satisfy you. Classical's your meat and potatoes."

So, some of these people have just been eating chocolate-covered strawberries all their lives, or worse, some of them crap, but since it's all they've ever eaten, they don't know it's crap. So, when they hear us talk about how we have some better food and we can't understand why they're only eating what they're eating, they don't understand. We look like snobs.

So how to remedy this problem? My personal opinion is to give them a STEAK! Some heart wrenching, soul-satisfying symphony. Also, if appropriate for the situation, let them know our incomes? So many people think that classical music is for 'posh' people. (I'm not sure why. Maybe they think it costs more or something?) I personally am not living in a mansion right now (heck, my orchestra teacher was a preacher's kid and had almost NO money growing up), and maybe it would be good for them to know that.

The best way to do any of this is with a smile and words of kindness. Like the Bible says, speak with grace and season your words with salt. I can't stand it when people are rude to these people (though I can't sit here and act like I've never done it, I have), because it only drives them farther away. :(

XD Sorry for rambling. Love you guys! Have a nice day! :)

I have wondered the same thing. How many would answer as derisively IN PERSON? Easy to sling insults through a monitor. If the question is so exasperating, why answer??? If you want to set someone straight on what is and is not classical or correct someone on what is a song and what is a symphony, then do so POLITELY. When I first started listening to classical music several years ago, I did not know the difference between a symphony and a sonata or a concerto and an overture. I went for months with only the first movement of Beethoven's Violin Concerto. I did not know there was more to it than one movement. I simply have not had an education in classical music. One can certainly receive a harsh education in classical music from many who have had the education, but I have learned that there are a lot of educated idiots on this forum.

Have you happened to read the Twilight books, the first of which the Twilight movie was based off of, bringing us "Bella's Lullaby"? I have. was also active in Books and Authors for quite some time, so I came in contact with more than a fair share of crazed Twilighters. It's a plague. You have to deal with the movie music in Classical, and that's pretty bad. We dealt with four books, plus plenty of talk about possible sequels and movie discussions and stupid little add-on books in B&A. The people in Movies and Polls and Surveys are fed up to, and even Comics and Animations have been upset. And that's just the surface.

Everyone with half a brain is pretty ticked off with all the hype right now, and probably will be until the last movie is out and there are no more add-on books to be had. And the terrible, sad part is, most Twilighters can't be explained to. It's just not worth even trying 90 percent of the time. They'll keep posting idiotic things, and if you get testy, they'll get angry and won't listen to a word you say. If you express any dislike for the stuff, you're not letting them have their own opinion and are being rude, in most of their minds. So, all you can do is be as polite as possible when expressing your opinion if you choose to do so. If you do that, you've done your part to steer them on to better things than Twilight. That's not snobbery, and it's in no way wrong, when done within limits.

** Hi, Papaganda! Yeah, I'm kind of scattered about right now, and not very active. I don't really see much point anymore. But I decided to answer this question.

Don't be amazed that people can and do embrace carp*.It happens in all walks of life (someone before me has mentioned the Twilight thing on other boards) But let me give you a for instance from the field of food. I'm a member of a number of on line survey groups and as such I and my wife were asked to undertake a new 'ready meal' food tasting at home. The said dish duly arrived (in packaging 10x the size of the container holding the food, but that's another story). We tried it the following day for lunch. It was totally appalling. The meat content tasted as if it had been made of rusk extract alone, a dough based side portion like lead. My wife makes similar meals from scratch every day and there is absolutely no comparison. Yet, I have no doubt that when these 'dishes' hit the supermarket shelves they will walk off, because people are lazy, they can't be bothered to cook and will shovel any carp down their throats. They cannot be bothered to acquire a finer palate (and I'm not speaking here as a foodie, most of whom are pretentious twats IMO).

It's exactly the same with Twilight, and Bella's Lullaby. People like carp. They cannot be bothered to try something that may stretch their minds a little. Why do the heavy weight broadsheets sell a tenth of the copies of the tabloids? Why can satellite television channels pump out hour after hour of undiluted mental mush? Why is reality television so popular and why has this nation (the UK) gone totally OTT over the death (admittedly sad) of a woman who made her name on one such show?

Finally, I would hazard a guess that all the questioners about T and BL are prepubescent females who have nothing else to think about now the Harry Potter saga has reached its end.

    (*deliberate typo to avoid censorship)

Kelsey - great to see you again! And in the classical section too!

As for answering the question, I think person described it perfectly. I'll add more later, but I'm leaving soon to visit my aunt.

Edit: Like I promised, I'm back. I've been doing some thinking, and have a few ideas. I think part of the problem is not a sufficient understanding and knowledge in music. I remember taking the standard music classes in eighth grade and not feeling enlightened in anyway. We watched movies about about some little kid who meets a famous composer, and nothing struck me as interesting. Then later I did get into classical music. Better music classes perhaps? Music does seem to be neglected in our school. We have about the same size school as the surrounding high schools but a band that hardly makes sixty. That is at least half the size of neighboring schools.

The lack of interest in classical music because of lack of popularity is another reason. And I'll elaborate more, but I have to go now and help make dinner. Sorry that my answer keeps getting interrupted.

Edit: Looking back at what I wrote, I see I haven't exactly answered your question. How to explain that difference? I suppose it would be easier if we were conversing with them face-to-face and not over the internet. They could see that we're just average people, not necessarily rich and definitely not arrogant. But conveying all that through a computer screen is hard. And like I said earlier, a better understanding of music in general would help.

Oh dear, I'm rambling, but I hope this answers your question.

I wouldn't bother explaining it. If someone asks a question on here that you don't want to answer, or you feel belongs in the wrong category, then don't answer it.

Or even better, if someone asks something like "what's a piano piece similar to Bella's Lullaby?", actually recommend a good classical piece to them. Maybe then they might become interested in classical music, rather than being turned off it by people who, to them, reinforce the idea that classical musicians are snobs.

If Bella's Lullaby can introduce them to classical music or get them to interested in listening to more music, then that can only be a good thing.
