How do you break up a dog fight?

I was at the dog park today with my beagle (almost all of the dogs there were off-leash). I was throwing the ball for her and she was bringing it back to me when another dog almost twice her size attacked her! Don't know why. Her owner and I both tried to break it up by grabbing the attacking dog's collar, but neither of us could grab it (they were moving too fast). Thank god a nice man who seemed to know what he was doing was able to step in and stop the fight. My beagle was yelping and I couldn't tell how badly she was being hurt during the fight. I was so shaken up, I didn't even think to ask for his advice at the time. She didn't have any bites on her. So what the hell are you supposed to do when a bigger dog attacks your dog? I would appreciate input! Serious answers only please. This is my dog that I love - don't waste my time with BS if you don't know what you're talking about here or if you're just online to F with people.

It can be really hard. It depends on the breed and the personality of the dogs involved. I've seen fights that one really couldn't break up without some extraordinary intervention: one of my friends hit one of his own dogs as hard as he could on top of the head with a two by four, and that broke up the fight, and didn't injure the dog (amazingly). In Alaska, where a lot of people run dog teams, one nightmare scenario is a big team fight that you can't stop. Sometimes a gun being discharged will do it( I realize that you probably don't have a gun, so the loudest noise you have, probably just shouting NO in an assertive tone will have to do). Sometimes you can wade in and start yanking dogs apart by their harnesses (one advantage with sled dogs, they're in harness).

Pepper spray can work, too. There's no easy answer: it depends on how confident you are yourself; the dynamics of the situation; the tools at hand. Actually, the bucket of water idea works well, although one never seems to have a bucket of water ready when one needs it.

One of my friends had her dog attacked by two Pits a month ago. They chewed him up pretty bad. If it had been me (her dog was on a leash, the Pits were running loose), I probably would have shot them. I would NOT wade into a fight of that sort, not with my bare hands. Good luck, it's a very stressful and frustating situation, which, if it's any consolation, rarely results in a dead dog. But those vet bills can mount up quickly.

I own toy dogs and have to make sure they don't get hurt by big mean dogs. Once a dog jumped on my pom (a mutt of some sort about 50 pounds). I grabbed him by the back of the neck (like a cat) and I mean hard. The owner was yelling at me from inside of her house not to hurt her dog. I live in the city where there are leash laws! I pulled him so hard my fingernails cut his neck up. I then proceeded to kick him repeatedly screaming and yelling. I called the police afterwards obviously. Since then I take a large stick with me. If the owner cannot control their dog, then I will. I don't care what anyone thinks. If you let your dog off leash (which is not allowed here), then you better be damned sure he won't hurt anyone at all! If it attacks my little 11 pound dog then I'm beating it until it stops moving. I had to clock one in the head a few good times. Another time one dog grabbed one of my pekingese and the owner didn't even try to help. She ran to the house screaming. So I took my hands and poked the dogs eyes. He probably would have been blind, but they put the dog down. Honestly, I wouldn't let my dog run around where other dogs are off leash. I've had all of these problems in the city with strict leash laws. I wouldn't dare let them around dogs just running around free. I hope the owner of the dog that attacked yours will be paying for any vet bills. I also hope you called animal control on them. If you can't control your dog- it's gotta go!!

Ya, it is a scary thing to have to do. But you guys did a good job. Always try to get the one that is doing the most bitting, if you can tell. If you grab the dog by his back legs and pick them up above the ground, they will almost always stop bitting to try to turn around. In most cases, they can not reach you to bit. It really does take two people to break it up.

I just don't like dog parks for that reason. I have a dog park here where there is a section for big dogs and one for smaller ones. Atleast then a small dog cant get killed.

Try to keep a distance if you can and speak in a firm voice. Do try to stay calm because dogs can sence fear, if that doesn't work, go behind the dog on top and try to grab it by it's ears and twist, this way it can't turn around and bite you. DON'T EVER THROW THINGS AT THE DOG! It will only anger the dog further.

The best way is to make a loud noise. a large yell or a loud clap. This will break the aggression and focus on you for a few seconds. Call your dog to come. If they do not know this command, then with those few seconds chase the other dog away.

It's best to keep dogs leashed. Or not go to dog parks =/ Which is REALLY annoying, because it's supposed to be a safe environment.

It does happen, because big dog owners seem to think that there dog is "the exception"

The safest thing to do if u are inexperienced is to get about 2 gallons of water and dumped it 1/2 gallon at a time towards the most aggressive dog's head.make sure its cold water. And I'm glad your dog didn't get hurt and no matter what type of dogs are fighting the water will do it no doubt because i have had this incident with a pit bull attacking a dog before. i'm a dog catcher and we have many complaints such as this one!!

Toys are never a good idea at a dog park. Some dogs are naturally aggresive over toys which was most likely the problem you experienced. Never get in the way of two dogs fighting (from personal experience trying to seperate two dogs myself i was bitten) You need to get a big enough object between the two dogs or if there is two of you there like there was eash should of grabed there own dog.

comparable intercourse pairings generally do no longer artwork out, and while 2 women human beings elect they are actually not getting alongside it is that. i'm assuming Dixie is likewise woman? I used to maintain a large style of canines in the domicile back in the 80's-13. 12 large canines one little canines. All became large till that thirteenth canines hit adulthood and desperate she hated the Siberian that became her comparable age. She would attack the Siberian which might then throw many others in my %. right into a combat. i became in a position to maintain order in the domicile, yet I had to section off my outdoor and positioned the canines into communities. at the instant of my 3 older canines I even have 2 women human beings that detest one yet another, consistently have. those canines have seperate yards. i'd specific save the Papillon out of the mixture. as quickly as I had that team of 13 my little canines who became minding his own employer have been given jumped and had one his jugulars punctured. That became an thrilling holiday to the emergency vet. He did stay to tell the story. because of the fact the Doberman is a sparkling addition- if making seperate yards isn't an decision perhaps sending her back to the folk you get carry of her from stands out as the main suitable difficulty.
