Can I use my wireless router for just 1 computer? Do I need 2 computers to connect to a network?

I currently have my linksys router connected to a desktop downstairs and I use it mainly to connect to the Internet with my laptop via WiFi. I'm going to be moving soon and I'm just taking my laptop with me along with the router. How will this work? I guess what I'm really asking is does a router need to be connected to a computer? Can I just plug my coaxial cable(going to use cable provider as ISP) into the router and connect to the Internet via WiFi with my laptop?

A router, once set up, will initialize with no computers connected, and can be used with just one (where it provides a bit of extra junk filtering compared to hooking up direct to an ADSL or cable modem).

I don't know of any cable-modem routers though, at least not in the UK where the only legal option is what the company provides, it may be different elsewhere.

Unless the device does have that capability, then you need the cable modem connected to the router.

A cable would work better as it does not suffer from as many interference issues that you have with a wireless connection. The drawback is having to run a cord and it might be exposed to where you can see it. A wireless connection can be okay too as long as you know you will have a nice clean line of sight. It really is going to come down to whether it will bother you if you have a cord running across your house.

Yes' I have only one computer and am connected. You can specify wireless or cable when purchasing supplier. Each supplier is different with different prices. I called many to determine my needs for my wireless laptop. When my grandsons come over, we can all use our laptops at the same time.

You can use it for as many computers as you like. I currently have my laptop and desktop linked into my wireless router. Soon I will have another desktop on that router.

You probably already figured it out by yourself that you can do it.

There is a slight possibility that you may need to connect it one time with the Ethernet cable to a computer (your laptop) to change some settings if it doesn't work automatically for you.
