Be sure to see Toshiro Mifune's classics, e.g. "Rashomon" (1951), "The 7 Samurai" (1954), "Yojimbo" (1961) and "Sanjuro" (1962). There are movies copying some of them, e.g. "The Naked 7" has 7 often nude girl warriors and "Manji Mai" has lovely Kumiko Takeda doing some of the same things Toshiro did in the movies I listed. "Samurai Armageddon" is a 1990's film that has the great swordsman Miyamoto Mushashi revived to face the hero Jube Yagyu. I am Japanese, so I know more about Japanese movies than Chinese movies, but some of my students have some Chinese movies. I recall "36th Chamber of Shaolin" as one of the best. "Butterfly & Sword", "Painted Face", "Blood Brothers", "Heaven Sword, Dragon Saber", etc. I belong to a Yahoo Group about martial arts movies and techniques, and it has an album of pictures from 1970's Hong Kong movies. If you want to buy such movies, check "hkflix" and "yesasia" websites. They have many of them.

The 5 deadly Venoms, 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Once upon a time in China, Iron Monkey, Jet Li's Fearless, Legend of the Drunken Master, Drunken Master, Fist of Legend, Tai Chi Master

All great martial arts movies especially if you like hong kong movies. The first few are Shaw bros films, so really old 70s cheesy costume amazing kung fu movies. The others have better story and production value if that is what you are into.

Also for a good samurai movie, Seven Samurai one of the great japanese classics. That movie is where the idea for The Magnificent Seven came from.
