Can a badily installed fan belt cause the water pump to die?

I have a chevy trailblazer 2004. It was in last week for a tuneup and a new fan belt three weeks ago. Can either of these cause the water pump to die?

Update:

Thanks all for the input. This truck has been maintained at the dealer exclusively, so they know me well and the truck. I asked the question because it seemed odd it failed right after the belt replacement and the tune up. Seemed something must have triggered it. and to the poster who said 150,000 km you are real close, i have 155,000 Km on it.

Update 2:

Oh and this is the second belt on the truck. Changed it at 60,000 KM and again at 155,000 KM (not miles). The truck is a lemon - 2004 model.

if the water pump was weak and they installed the belt so tight causing extra pressure on the pump bearing it be the reason the pump failed shortly afterwards.but that's if your blazer is not equipped with a self tensioner.but over all and either way your pump was probably on its way out.so i would not put the blame on those who worked on your blazer last.

Are the belts the proper tension? Have you stuck your head under the hood while the engine is running to figure out where the noise is coming from? (Be very careful not to hurt yourself while doing this.) If it's still a belt making the noise and it has the proper amount of tension, then get a bar of soap. While the vehicle is on, apply the soap to a pulley the squeaking belt is on. This should get rid of the noise. If it destroys your car and kills you or your cat, I am in no way responsible...Do all of this at your own risk.

Water pumps wear out your car probably has like 150,000 miles right? You will be putting some money in to maintaining this car so get used to it. If you don't want to deal with the maintence issues buy a newer car with less mileage.

My guess is that the water pump had something to do with the belt going bad. If it was binding a little it would have ruined the belt. You can do that job yourself with a Haynes Manual if you want. It is not that hard to do.

A new belt would put more tension on the pulley, like new tension that is, but if the water pump is gone now it was ready anyway...

the belt will only go 1 way and no the belt won,t mess up the water pump.

    Not in the slightest.
