Before the 1920's they had bathing costumes. Just a more fashionable pair of long handle underwear. In fact, the first man to swim the english channel wore his woolen long johns and used only the breast stroke.
My Dad's swim suit in the 1930's was a pair of gym shorts, matching athletic tee shirt, and a swim supporter underneath. For my Dad, to swim with out his shirt, was indecent. You might as well swim naked, and a lot of guys did. Still, swimsuits from the 1930's had laundry issues.
By the 1950's we had modern Catalina Swimsuits, made of nylon or polyester mixes, that did not mess with pool filters and water chemistry.
