If you have a Windows computer, and you probably do or you likely wouldn't be having this difficulty (no offense: I'm a Windows user too!), almost every question you could have about setting up your system to read and write Chinese characters can be found answered at www.pinyinjoe.com.

If you're using a Windows operating system, you'll need the install CD to get the East Asian fonts installed. By default, they are not installed unless you customized the install to include all fonts. Downloading anything else from the internet might not work the same as getting the fonts installed properly.
