What is this idiotic idea about Ireland rejoining the Commonwealth?
In today's Irish Times is a snarky and condescending editorial apparently responding to some political movement for the Republic of Ireland to rejoin the British Commonwealth. Although I try to follow Irish politics fairly closely, this is the first I've heard that such an idea was even being considered. Needless to say, I was appalled. Whose idea is this? Surely it doesn't have much political traction, especially since Ireland is a member of the European Union and the U.K. is not. I'll research the matter a bit myself, but I'd appreciate your opinions on the matter.
I neglected to note that I'm American, so my perspective is not necessarily the same as a resident of Ireland or Northern Ireland.
Oops...that's embarrassing. It's true that the U.K. is a member of the E.U. Thanks to Wise Guy and "I should be doing something else" for pointing that out.
I assumed it wasn't because it still uses the pound sterling as its currency, rather than the euro.

Yeah someone posted about it in another question so I did a search for the fella who wrote it.
Turns out he is a 'satirist' - That is his full time job. I read some of his other 'work' and I have to say it was all equally as idiotic as the piece that you read.
Not my idea of humour at all, and I find most things funny, so that is really saying something.
Coincidentially, according to his Wiki page he is a Unionist, which is fair enough, but why is he choosing to write for Nationalist leaning newspapers, and even more of a query is, why are they agreeing to print this crap?
PS - The UK are indeed part of the European Union (Not sure why you thought it wasn't?) but the currency is not Euro like most EU members, rather Pounds STG.

Well it's the first time that I've heard of it too. Hopefully, it's not true as I don't think that there's a single person in this country that would agree with it or accept it.
I also thought the same concerning the point of the Republic being unable to join the Commonwealth because of it being a member of the EU. Hopefully this is just a mistake on the Irish Times part as I feel that if it is true then the country is going backwards in a big way.

The UK is a member of the European Union, it joined in 1973 along with the Republic of Ireland.
Whatever Political movement that is, it is a pathetic joke and these people will never ave any decent support, the Irish people laugh off such a suggestion

NO, its no longer likely to take place. i will state the obtrusive and say it took us 800 years to get out of it completely, and a 'republic' by skill of its very nature would not help a monarchy! yet this is yet another extensive debate with regard to the jobs of royalty in Europe and Asia at present, like purely how relative and representative are those non elected human beings to their 'human beings', (complete different debate, so i will end now). i think of NI could go the path of Scotland etc and set up a greater self governing state, and then settle on which way they decide directly to flow. yet we've in basic terms have been given our act and wealth jointly interior the final 15 12 months;s, a exceptional thank you to tackle rebuilding the North could value too plenty, even though if NI try to undertake our enterprise tax regulations to make making an investment there greater alluring, worked for us, so why no longer for them. And, celebrations all around, and the 'respected British military presence' ended this week in Northern eire, we are formally at peace. So the British military presence there is quite like its presence on the united kingdom mainland

There is absolutely no reason on this earth for the Irish Republic to even want to be part of the Commonwealth.

I'm from Northern Ireland. I hate when there are talks of having a United Ireland. No. There's Ireland, on its own. And then there's Northern Ireland. Part of the UK and governed by her Majesty.
