What's the difference between a cougar, a puma, and a mountain lion?

1. These are three sub-species of Puma concolor

2. These are three different names for the same species.

3. Mountain lions are larger than pumas, which are larger than cougars.

4. They are different colours.

    Not scientific but Puma is of the genus Felidae which includes the Cougar and Mountain lion (panther) . Regionally speaking, in the US southwest (at least in Arizona) we call them Mountain lions. In other parts of the southwest I have heard them called Cougars. In parts of the US south they are called Panther.

    The only difference is in the name, all thee are the same species of animal but just called something different depending on what region you are in. I love tricking people with this question!

    2. This species has the most names (common names) of any animal. Other names for it are "florida panther" and "catamount"

    There is no difference, that cat has many names.
