Love is inanimate but it can still hurt.  It's treating love like a physical being, which it's not.  If it hurts you, hurt it back!

it's personifying love specifically as an opponent. imagine two boxers in a ring. if one hits the other, his opponent has no chance of winning if he just stands there and takes it. he must strike back, blow for blow to gain victory. basically the speaker is saying that often times love can cause great pain, so you must take control over love.
