Resources for young Canadian collectors?

Hi there! We're a young couple looking for the best places in Quebec, Manitoba, Ontario or New York to look for original art on the cheap-ish side. Student galleries would be perfect. Does anyone know if there's some kind of magazine or website that has a list of galleries we can check out?

Update:

I wouldn't go so far as to say that we're looking for a piece of art that will be in our family for generations --- I remember as a student that Fine Arts students at our university used to have shows where they sold their exercises and projects. Since they were student works, kind of rushed for the end of term, they were less expensive than professional canvases.

I guess I'm just thinking it could work out for both of parties if we could find kind of an amateur gallery --- we could have an original and interesting piece at a reasonable price, and at the same time support a young or amateur artist that hasn't gone professional yet.

(And I wouldn't be comfortable picking something from a catalogue; I was more hoping that there would be some kind of gallery listing somewhere. For example, a magazine or website with entries like:

"Gallery Tatar, Toronto: Contemporary Canadian and American artists, photography, mixed media" or some such.)

Thanks for the responses so far!

What do you mean by "cheap-ish"? What's your price range? How much are you willing to spend on an original work of art that will probably be in your family for generations to come?

There is a small periodical called "The Gallery Guide", and it covers various regions. This might be a good source for you, but it covers ALL the legitimate galleries in each area. There is no magazine or other source that I know of that specializes in inexpensive art.

I don't know of such a magazine but if you were willing to decide on a purchase based on a photo in a magazine then why not on a website? There are thousands of fabulous artists selling original work at ArtWanted. If you have an eye for good art you should sift through some of them. Here's a link...
