Badertscher is a variant of Bartscher, an occupational name for a barber (a compound of Middle High German bart ‘beard’ + scher from scheren ‘to cut or clip’.

There are many family names in German countries which derive from occupations (e.g. Müller = Miller). Some of these names are very typical for particular regions. Badertscher is a common name in Bern. In Zurich for example, it's less common.

There must have been an immigration from Bern (probably in the 19th Century) into the U.S. People who left their communities in Switzerland didn't just go to different places but stayed together in a new community in the U.S.. Between 1850 and 1914, around 400,000 Swiss people left their country because of economical reasons. These people were usually farmer folks. That might be the reason.
