I need advice on how to get in shape for the swim team and swim techniques!?
Okay, so I was on a competitive swim team, but had to quit when I was ten. Now, in the fall of this year, I am going to try out for the high school swim team.
But the thing is, I'm out of shape for swimming; I'm healthy overall, but being in shape for swimming is a totally different concept. So I need advice on how to get in shape for swimming- you know, like techniques and tricks to improve. I plan to work on my swimming almost everyday once the pool warms up.
Also, I don't want to be the only kind who tries out and doesn't know how to do a flip-turn. I know the basic idea of it, but i need a detailed explanation.
I remember most of the things I was taught on the swim team, but anything you can contribute to help me out in anyway for swimming would be really appreciated.
I'm really nervous about trying out and want to do the best I can without making a fool out of my self!

to get in shape, swim AT LEAST 20 laps [or 500 yds] everyday
in addition, you could [it's optional] do dry-land exercises such as squats, push-ups, lunges, crunches, and leg lifts. at least 30 of each every other day.
it's hard to explain how to do a flip turn without showing you how, but i'll try:
you swim until you're close to the wall. once you're close, you tuck your legs into your body and flip forwards, landing on your back. then, you push off of the wall.
i wouldn't worry if you can't do it, a lot of kids who try out for the high school team can't do flip turns.
this might help:

At my swim team, we start out doing 3 hr practices for a month I august before school starts. Do lots of land training- running, sit-ups, lunges, etc. because it builds up your muscles.
Also, swim several laps a day- at least 500 yds
Talk to your parents about joining a summer swim program they have groups for different levels and abilities and it will also help you get in shape, and help you learn that flip turn
This could be kinda hard to explain but I'll try:
As you approach the wall, take a final breath then your last few strokes towards the wall. Get close enough where you can flip over without hitting your head on the wall. Flip over and push off the wall as hard as you can, you will still be upside down when you push off so while your sailing away from the wall, before you start kicking, spin back over so your on your stomach and start taking strokes. This is only for freestyle, there are other ways to do your turns as well.

If you really want to get in shape do both dry land workouts and in pool workouts.
Dry land workouts: Squat jumps, push-ups, sprints, squat thrust jumps, and jogging
In-pool workout: Wear "drag" clothes, like shorts and t-shirts when you're swimming. As far as a workout goes start with a warmup of anywhere from 200 to 500 yards, then to an IM or a pyramid where you do a 25, then a 50, then a 75, then a 100, then go back down 75, 50, 25.
There are also training tricks you can do like the Tarzan swim and the finger drag. Tarzan is where you hold your upper body out of the water and swim freestyle. The finger drag is like is sounds, you drag your fingers across the top of the water as you swim freestyle. There are training tricks like this for every stroke.
For the flip turn, I always told my swimmers that it was just like doing a flip for fun in the pool, but you stop when your feet get to the wall, and you spin around and push off. I swam for 10 years and coached for 2 years before I moved across the state. Let me know if you want to know any other tricks or anything. I really miss coaching.

Yes the nice swimmers swim all yr circular however you do not have got to with the intention to nonetheless be respectable. if you're fairly interested, ask your instruct for a few suggestions earlier than train or keep past due after train. Also youtube has a few movies, and the promote books and movies on amazon too. But there may be fairly no alternative for train. If you are too embarassed see if the YMCA has a few lesson systems. Don't fear approximately what different teammates or humans say. If you keep it up you WILL get larger. you could get probably the most accelerated swimmer award at yr finish. And you're going to be a miles larger swimmer than such a lot of your classmates sitting within the stands, although you do not win a number of medals.
