What is a reasonable amount of money to charge for babysitting?

My sister is having a little boy (he was unplanned) and she really doesn't want to put him in daycare because she doesn't want "strangers raising him." So I agreed to babysit him from 3 until whenever she or her fiance gets home which is around 7-9.

I told her she will have to pay me, because babysitting is preventing me from getting a "real" job and I'm trying to save up for a car.

How much is a good amount to charge per day, but an amount that is cheaper than daycare? I really want to help her out, but I need to get money for my car. Thanks (:

Update:

Oh and to add I have no problem at all babysitting for so long because I don't go out on weeknights anyway, and I love my nephew so much already (:

Update 2:

I live in California, and my sister is 20.

I run a daycare in California and I charge $30/day for a 9 hour day. That is a pretty typical rate which comes to $150/week.

Since you would only be watching him 6 hours a day and also want to help her out, I would probably charge about $20/day.

I have no idea where you live in the world you could possibly live in the UK and this could be no help to you. But I live in Toronto (Canada) and about 20 dollars a day is what all babysitters I know charge. My aunt baby sits for that amount and my sisters babysitter sits for that amount.

hope that was some help to you.

keep in mind that it is your sister and if the baby was unplanned shes probably young. and even tho you think that is it's preventing you from getting a "real job" there is lots of jobs for in the morning time. You clearly don't have a job now. So I guess you don't really need it. Plus that money is under the table and never has to be claimed.

so 20 dollars may be a little high for her. I personally don't think so. But who knows what situation shes in.

Where I live(Canada) the going rate is about $6 an hour or $40 for a full 8 hour day. This is strangers and daycare rates.

Some places are more expensive though. It really depends on where you live, how much your sister can afford and how much experience you have.

You'd only be babysitting, at the most, 6 hours/night. That's about 30 hours/week(this is, of course, if they always come home at 9). The daycares I worked at charged around 130/week for infants(it could be different where you live). I think if you charged them $20/day that would give you roughly $100/week. Still less than a center but not a bad profit for yourself.

I have a 3 week old and here a newborn in licensed care is usually 35-40 a day OR if less than 6 hours- 5$/hr.

I pay my best friend 200/ month but she only watches her 10 hours a week. so yeah...

Its generally ABOUT full time: 500--800 a month for full time daycare if she put her in one. she could probably get the state to help her pay you and you could receive full pay like 790/month for full time watching her

It depends how old you are ..if you're over 18 then about 10 an hour. If you're younger than that...then the pay is lower.

    15 yr old: min wage.

16 yr old: 8 an hour

17 yr old: 9 an hour

18-24 yr old: 10 an hour

25+ yr old: 11 and hour

Depending on age...but if she's your sister and you don't want to make her pay so much you can take a few dollars off

    Hope I helped : DD

I would go for min. wage ( I think it is $7.65/hour). Because the time your giving up to watch your nephew you could be making that hourly min. wage with a "real job".
