Either a ball mouse or optical mouse needs a surface to run on.

How did you expect it to detect it's moving in the first place? It has to detect "something" while moving....

Mouses (mice?) work by using a laser to track along a surface. If you move the mouse off of the surface then the laser beam it emits cannot be reflected back to the receiver, and it will not move. You can probably still click though.

You should not expect it to work for you, unless you are paying it above minimum wage.

Also, put the damn thing back in its cage. Man-handling a mouse makes it uncomfortable, and continuing to do so is animal cruelty.

I mean, how would YOU feel if your boss death-hugged you for hours on end while demanding you simultaneously do your job? Personally, I would file a lawsuit.

Basically there are two kinds of computer mice, one with a little roller ball and one that uses laser light. Both types need to be on a flat surface so the movement can be detected. Picking it up is not a movement it can sense and transmit to the PC.

optical mouse needs feeding, it needs you to put it down on the table. I've a good mind to report you for cruelty to mice.joke..

It is an optical mouse, use it on a surface with texture.

Because it's not on a hard surface. in order for it to move, it needs to be on a hrad and smooth surface.

Because it has to be on the surface of something to move...You can't just hold it up and move it and expect it to work
