Looking for a 1964 VW Beetle Engine?
I found a really nice 1964 VW Beetle but it needs a new engine. This is my first car and I have a very limited budget. I was wondering if there are any one sale online for a decent price. I've searched ebay and amazon and haven't had any luck. The sooner I could find one the better since my dad won't lend me the down payment until I prove that I can afford to fix it up. thank you!

www.thesamba.com
Highlight Classifieds
there will be a drop down menu, click search
type engines in the search box and your zip code in the zip code box
click on the mileage button next to it, choices range from 5 to 200. Good luck. Now I have a 64 and depending where you live, I bought and engine from A&D Buggies (BBB AA rating) in Torrance CA (310) 320-0642. They are the guys that build the engine every year for the Carson CA fire Dept when the run in the Baja 500. They come with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. Also go to
www.mamotorworks.com (little pricey, but good quality)
or
www.aircooled.net (excellent folks, excellent service, and John there is always helpful. Here is a write up below courtesy of www.vw-resource.com on the engine from aircooled.net and how to install that:

By the way, any air-cooled beetle engine can fit in the car. I own a 64 and have a 1600SP in it. The only thing (depending on your engine) you may need to change is the intake and muffler. Now if you have a 1200 (40HP) then there is more to change, lots more. I dont know what you have due to what you wrote in your question, but what I provided should help you. Good luck.

Forget ebay. Check local garages and wrecking yards and ask other VW owners who know somebody who might have one kicking around as a paperweight. It does not need to be 1964 either most years will bolt right in 60-70's. Cheaper and faster to find. And it does not have to be from another bug. You can take it from a Type 2 or 3 as well - you are just missing some metal(for the doghouse) which can be got here and there.

I bought a short block engine from West Coast Core in Lancaster, California (661-726-9915). It was over built with a cam and larger pistons.. With the shipping it was about $1600 delivered (stock engines and cores are a lot cheaper). BUT.. it was pretty good.
I threw on my tin, added the carb and generator and such and I had the engine in my car and doing its first test run in about 2 hours. That was two years ago and it still runs like a bat out of hades and starts every cold morning on the first crank. (although it runs a rough idle with that cam but that was MY choice).
You can find them via Google.. I think they also sell via eBay

Try these:

This bloke is in Australia (like me), but his motors are absolutely brilliant. Very strong and reliable. I have had the same 1641 with dual Kadrons for 13 years and it still runs strong. 110000 miles and I pulls 61 rear wheel hp. I know that doesn't sound like much, but it makes a BIG difference in a light car like the Beetle. That power is enough to keep up with normal traffic easily.
Good luck with your Bug.
