Chinese Takeaways in the UK tend to use American Long Grain rice. This is because it is cheap and is good for making fried rice (which is the more popular form of fice from Chinese takeaways in the UK). However, when cooking at home, most Chinese people I know will use Thai Hom Mali (Thai Jasmine Rice). Hardly any would use Basmati. Basmati rice tends to have too strong a flavour that does not go as well with Chinese dishes, and it does not stick together enough after being cooked.
