How many legs are there in the school bus?

I received this via an e-mail today and it is making me crazy. Can someone help? An explanation of your answer would also be appreciated so that I can understand the thought process. Thanks!

There are 7 girls in a bus. Each girl has 7 backpacks. In each backpack, there are 7 big cats. For every big cat, there are 7 little cats.

The bus driver is not in the bus at this time.

    7 girls- 2 legs each = 14 legs

    7 backpacks * 7 girls = 49 backpacks

    49 * 7 big cats= 343 big cats

    343 big cats * 4 legs= 1372 big cat legs

    343* 7 little cats= 2401 little cats

    2401* 4= 9604 little cat legs

    14+ 1372+ 9604= 10,990 legs

    7 girls x 2 legs = 14 legs

    7 girls x 7 backpacks = 49 backpacks

    49 backpacks x 7 big cats = 343 big cats

    343 big cats x 4 legs = 1,372 legs

    343 big cats x 7 little cats = 2,401 little cats

    2,401 little cats x 4 legs = 9,604 legs

    9,604 legs + 1,372 legs + 14 legs = 10,990 legs total

7x4=28 (number of big cats in each backpack x how many legs they each have = 28 big cats legs)

28x7=196 (Number of legs of 7 cats x number of big cats in the bag= number of all little cats legs)

196+28=224 (Big cats legs + little cats legs = all legs in each back pack)

224x7=1568 (all legs in each backpack x how many one girl has = number of legs each girl carries)

1568+2=1570 (Number of all legs in backpacks + girl's legs = number of legs per unit)

1570x7=10, 990 (number of legs in one unit x number of units = total number of legs

10,990 not including the bus driver.

A school bus doesn't have legs. It runs on tires. This one was around 45 years ago when I was in school.
