What will happen if I don't file my NY state tax?

I'm supposed to get a refund of $13... can I just let it go? It's not worth it to me to go through the trouble of filing. if I don't file, will I have to pay a penalty?

I live in NY. They expect you to file, even when they owe you a refund, or you will be fined sooner or later.... and later is a big fine. Better to take the time to collect the measley 13.00, then to pay 100.00 or more down the road!

In Canada, the government does not care if you don't file if you are owed a refund. But, in this case, could you have made a mistake? Could you really owe $13 rather than be owed $13? If it is possible that you made a mistake, I think you should file. You can get into trouble for not filing when you owe the government taxes.

Heres my take on it. If the government is willing to track you down to penalize you for $13 more power to them. I think they have some bigger fish to fry. Beware if you get auited later on in your life that could come up. Most likely nothing will happen:)

IF you made less than 3,000 dollars they will leave you alone.
