What IS metal music to you?
i have a pretty good idea:
its just a bunch of long haired guys singing about having lunch with satan in an obnoxious chainsaw-like voice
what do you think it is to you?
i prefer 70s punk and grunge....

I already don't like you...
Source(s): An understatement. And your 70s punk and grunge can piss off. I wouldn't mind grunge so much if it didn't inspire 90% of the sh*t bands we have today, though. - Anonymous1 decade ago
Metal is such an incredible genre due to its sheer breadth. Whereas all 70s punk bands sound pretty much the same and all grunge sounds exactly the same, metal has so many types. I mean you have the really slow doom metal that creeps along slowly and the death metal that blasts you in the face at inhuman speeds, plus just different instrumentation and styles in other subgenres. Metal is about rebelling, speaking out against the world and getting people to headbang in unison. Metal = incredible music. Plus, as said above, not many people at all talk about Satan in that kind of way, thats just the media who makes a big deal out of nothing (there are death, black metal, and doom bands that do, but that is still only a fraction of those subgenres and of metal overall). I bet you think Black Sabbath is Satanic when really they only had ONE song that was favorable to the devil (NIB), yet the media blew that out of proportion.
(Now granted there are unoriginal talentless metal acts, and if you are basing your arguments on numetal then ignore that subgenre)
edit: as for the chainsaw vocals, i bet you have never listened to opeth or between the buried and me's extremely talented vocalists who can SING unbelievably well, as well as growl. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio...yeah, all shitty chainsaw vocalists...

Isn't grunge a thing of the 90's not the 70's? To each their own if you don't like metal you don't like metal big deal. You don't see us Metal heads runnin' around saying "oh punk and grunge sucks" "waa-waa" Everyone relates to music in different ways and btw metal is far from santanic music ya dang hippie smoke another one why don't ya!

I agree with C-DUB fixin NOLA [DIME Bro], but in a less authoritative tone...
calm down dude, it's her opinion....if she doesn't like it, respect that...
edit: What luke6668 said is true. there are so many metal sub-genres that don't even yell and scream. Folk Metal, Power Metal, Progressive Metal...the list continues...They actually sing similarly to your 70s punk and grunge (not too similar though)

Metal is pretty open ended.
Its not all about satan.
Some is though.
Its a compilation of blasting beats and heavy guitar.
Some people find this very appealing.
I find some of it appealing.
Oh and all the people saying punk and grunge means nothing and metal is more than just music its a message.
Punk is more about the message than the music most of the time!!
it just depends on what speaks to you
Punk and grunge speak to me way more than metal
I usually just listen to metal for the kick *** guitarists like
Chris Impellitteri, Yngwie Malmsteen, Micheal Angelo, Van Halen etc.
In conclusion, music is all opinionated
P.S. 70's punk and grunge kick ***

And still people wonder why we metal-lovers (I refuse to call us metal-heads ;) ) hate bands like Korn or Slipknot. They just give all the wrong impressions about metal.
You're talking about black metal specifically actually. (its theme revolves around satan...it's getting old really >.>) Oh and i'm not particularly fond of it too.
IMO, metal music is simply powerful, emotional music :D
I'm pretty sure that 90% of the people here have only heard of the mainstream metal artists, which don't even compare to most underground stuff nowadays. I admit, you just won't find good metal anymore unless you take an effort to do so.

LoL, nice description, it reminds me of this one...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QascXwq-fws
but Metal is far too broad for me to give a good description of it, there's the mellow stuff, the heavy stuff, the complex stuff, the simple stuff, the weird stuff, the rhythmic stuff, the old stuff, the new stuff, the folksy stuff, I mean, it's really hard to boil it down and to be quite honest, I don't have any idea how to define it myself, even though I've been listening to it for over 10 years, for me it's a case of "I'll know it when I hear it"
I'm gunna have to disagree with you Nihil, I quite like Korn and Slipknot, yeah they give the wrong impression and stuff, that's unavoidable with successful bands, I just reckon it's good music though.

Metal is very heavy rock that's not necessarily sung with just screaming, but more hatred. I prefer my rock music where i can at least understand the lyrics. Like nickelback and metallica and on occasion there might be a band that screams just a little bit that i can handle, but that's rare.

Something that makes me want to chop down a tree and burn it for whatever reason..
