Anyone had root canal pain that lasted 7 days?
I had a root canal 7 days ago and it's still very painful. I'm taking Vicoden and an antibiotic, but it's not really helping. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Anyone know what might be wrong? Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the info. Yes, my dentist did an X-ray both before and after the root canal and said it looked fine. I went back to him yesterday and he checked it again and said it looked ok, no infection, and told me to just wait a little longer for the pain to go down, and he gave me more pain killer meds. It is still hurting a lot today...it hurts in my cheek, jaw, and other teeth over and around it. But my dentist said this is normal since it was a difficult tooth in the first place. Does this seem normal to you dental proffesionals??? It has been 8 days now since the root canal and he said to just wait a while longer for the pain to subside, and that this is normal.

sandra is quite correct. After 7 days if a patient of mine is in discomfort I get very concerned. I expect a tooth to be a little tender for a few days after a root canal procedure, but by a week I expect it to be much better.
You must talk to your dentist. He/she will have a really good idea what could be wrong since he/she did the root canal in the first place. Perhaps as sandra said the root fill could be long or short. Perhaps it is possible that a root canal was missed. An x-ray of the tooth after the root canal procedure should have been done. If it wasn't, it should be.
Point is, it is time to discuss it with your dentist.
Update: Which tooth is giving you trouble?
No this doesn't seem right to me. Maybe if everything seems ok, you need to try a different antibiotic or a stronger antibiotic dose. In my experience a tooth should really settle down within a week of having a root canal done. You seem to be getting worse.

It should not hurt after a root canal(just mild discomfort for a few hours) because the nerve is gone.Did your dentist take an X-ray of the tooth that was treated AFTER the procedure? If not--change the dentist !
He may have gone beyond the apex of the tooth when he put the guttapercha cone in the root canal. (They are supposed to check this by taking an X-ray after the procedure) Or it could be something else that the dentist did (or not) wrong !! Anyway go back before it gets more complicated...I'm a dental technician and I worked a few years as a dental assistant as well , have almost 26 years experience in the dental field. Sorry for your pain...

Considering how deep they drill it isn't surprising that your pain has lasted this long.
