Can a small turtle be place in a regular fish tank with a floating dock?

My daughter found a baby turtle, very little, that we think a bird must have dropped in our neighbors yard. We plan to release him after he gets a little bigger. My question is can I just put him in the tank with our fish with those floating docks? Has anyone done this before? His little habitat gets nasty fast so it would be nice to have his water filtered in the fish tank.

Like many others have said, turtles eat fish, but that doesn't mean they WILL eat yours. If your turtles are well fed they will most likely ignore the fish. My wife works for an animal shelter, and they have a large tank with all sizes and types of turtles (babies to huge ones!) The tank is also FULL of feeder goldfish. Occasionally one will get eaten, but feeder fish are usually like 33 cents or less and it doesn't happen often. You should be able to enjoy both without any problems!

As for the filtration you may want to add another filter to the tank to aid in removing the turtle poop :) And don't forget to test the ammonia levels. Turtles pee a lot more than fish so he could alter your Bio in the tank.

    GOOD LUCK!

Chances are he will eat the fish.

Turtles are also filthy animals and are not really suitable for tanks. I know a lot of people do keep them in tanks but have you ever wondered why so many are abandoned in ponds and lakes?

They are perfectly fine in very deep water as long as they can get out to warm up. What you could do if you want to raise it temporarily is get a cheap hard sided paddling pool and make a habitat in the garden. He will however try to escape and they can climb chicken wire, so if you make an enclosure then it will need an escape proof lip on the inside

Also they can carry disease like salmonella so make sure you wash thoroughly after handling.

    good luck

You know when you see ponds in parks and there usually are a few turtles floating around in the water, so I'd think it'll be alright to put the baby turtle in the fish tank.

  • Oh, I forgot turtles eat fish. would the lobster be okay? Oh the questions we must ponder on a day to day basis

turtles need a regulated tempreature as they are cold blooded. You should find a shelter or give him to someone who knows what to do to take care of reptiles.
