Setting up a router using Static IP?

I plan on purchasing a wireless N router made by linksys. My internet service provider is AVCI.net. When they installed it they said that I needed to set it up for Static IP I have no idea how to do such.

Apparently your ISP has set up your service with a static public IP address. They have proivded you with the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and two DNS addresses. You need these.

Connect your pc to your router LAN port using a CAT5 cable. Never configure a router, upgrade router firmware, or do any other router work with a wireless pc link - always a wired link.

Once on the router, go to the public or Internet or WAN (whichever they call it) page and select static IP address (it is probably defaulted to dynamic IP address). Once static IP is selected you will see boxes for the ip address, subnet mask, default gateway, and dns server addresses. Fill these in with the proper addresses. Save the configuration and proceed to configure the private side and then the wireless.

I suggest that you go to the router maker web site and see if they have newer firmware on the site than is on the router. If so, I suggest you upgrade the router firmware before you configure the router. Firmware upgrades are in fact improvements that will provide better performance.

All you have to do, is go into your control panel, and see where your IP is, and change it. o.O

    Or just unplug. :@
