Wireless router question?
Room mate has an existing wireless router already set up with security, one desktop hardwired and a former roomie had a laptop with a wireless connection. That one is not being used any more.
Now I have a different laptop. The wireless in the lap top recognizes the router signal but says it needs the key. Room mate can't remember how to get into the set up of the router.
Any one got an idea?

For most routers, you access the settings through your internet explorer (enter the url: 192.168.0.1) the login information, assuming he hasn't modified it, will be "username = admin password = password"
From there you can set the WEP/WPA encryption key/code and then you should have the information you need to access the wifi.

Based on your question if your room mate can't remember how to get into the setup of the router. I would assume there's a possibility if a password was set on the Admin account they probably don't remember that either.
On most routers there is reset button that is usually located on the back of the router.
Hold this button in for at least 10 seconds. You will probably need to use a pin or a pencil or pen tip to access the button as its usually pretty small so it isn't hit accidentally. This button will reset the router back to factory defaults. Which usually includes a blank password for the admin account.
Once the router is reset you should be able to get in using either http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.1/ in a web browser.
If you do this it is important to remember to reset the security settings on the router especially establishing a password on the admin account.

As many other user's said you need to access your router's "Default Gateway" to be able to change your router settings. To find your router's gateway it should be printed on the bottom of your router, most of the time it is "192.168.0.1" (without of the quotation marks of course : P ). Once you find what your router's default gateway, open up firefox or Internet explorer and paste it into the address bar and press enter, it should then prompt you for for a username and password.
Most of the time it is usually just "admin" and "password" (again without quotation marks : P ). If this doesn't work either your roommate changed the username and password or your router's default user name and password are different. If this happens just google the name of your router and "default password" and you should be able to find it's default password and username and if your roommate changed it there should be a switch in the back of the router to reset it to factory settings.

all you have to do is reset the router by pressing and holding down the reset button for few seconds to set the router to factory default. after which you will need to re-configure the router by entering the router ip address into your browser and hit enter on the keyboard as if you were loging into a website.
most router ip address starts with 198.168.*.*

press in the reset button in on the router for about 5secs and release, wait for the router to bootup again, this will remove all personal passwords and preferences. you can now connect to the router without it asking you for a security key...to logon to the routers ip, the login password will be the factory default password which is admin...dont fill in the user name, just leave it blank

On the hardwired computer, you should be able to. Open your internet browser (firefox, IE, etc.) and in the address bar (where it says www.whatever.com) and type in 192.168.1.1 That should get you in to the router setup. Atleast, that's how I do it.
