Although Net10 does have some good deals there is also some fine print that might not be answered in all the wording on the back of the package (a friend had trouble with them, but doesn't mean someone else would). Right now the cell companies are fighting for competition, so use that. Apparently, Boost is pretty dang good from what I hear.
As for credit cards it totally depends on your credit really. Most prepaid cards have so many fees attached that it's really important to read the fine print, same as with prepaid anything. If you're in the US you might want to pull up a free credit report to see where you stand then you don't have to mess with all the hidden fees of prepaid.

It depends on how you use the phone.
Personally, I think PagePlus cellular is the best if you do a moderate amount of talking and texting (eg. nothing excessive). For a $80 card, it costs less than $0.06/min / $0.08/text and the card lasts for 120 days.
I use approximately 500min and 100 texts per month and it averages out to $28/mo for me. There's no contract and the network's Verizon's. Yet, I don't have to deal with their awful customer service (PagePlus' customer service shields you from the BS).
Though I do have to mention - if you do up to 1000min per month, you might want to take a look at Virgin Mobile. Or, if you text much more than you talk, Net10 might be the best.

Boost Mobile recently introduced an unlimited prepaid calling plan for $50. If you want to limit your bill but have an endless bucket of minutes, this is the plan to choose. You get unlimited nationwide talk and text, web access and walkie-talkie service. Boost uses the Nextel network.
