If "liberty" means freedom and "justice" means fairness and equity, then why do conservatives have a problem?

with same sex marriage?

This is where I disagree with my Conservative friends. In the name of the same liberty which gives them their freedom I believe same sex unions should be allowed. Though since marriage is the term which describes a heterosexual union a new term should be coined for the homosexual union. Seems like a good time to be creative.

I still don't agree with homosexuality but I don't agree with every other free and legal act either. All I know is that at some point we have to stop trying to legislate morality. God didn't do that, he gave us free will, but we humans think we know better than God.

Maybe the answer is that conservatives are being told they have to accept a redefinition of a sacred institution of their lives so a group can lay claim to it when there is another alternative available.

The gay marriage issue seems to be one of legal rights (which I support whole-heartedly) and can be accomplished through civil unions, without altering the definition of marriage (which I do not think is a good idea).

People need to realize that rights extend up to the point where they infringe on someone else's rights. A balance can be found in this equation. It just seems that supporters of gay marriage are not willing to look for that alternative that will provide the legal equality they are seeking. It has become a battle for the word and definition of marriage.

Fairness and equity means that ALL are treated fairly. Changing something to satisfy one group, while offending another is not fair, nor equal treatment.

We have no problem with liberty. Freedom is at the core of our beliefs. That is why we are against policies that are socialist in nature.

We have no problem with justice. Fairness means we should all be treated the same. We should get to keep what we earn. etc...

    As for same sex marriage.

We have no problem with gay couples having the same rights and benefits that a straight couple has. Our problem is the redefinition of the word marriage.

    Websters dictionary:

Marriage - to unite as husband and wife.

Words have meanings and definitions for a good reason.

Call it a civil union or something that defines it correctly. Don't redefine words.

Since when do we give rights to change the definition of words. Marriage has always been defined as between a man and a woman. Anyone is free to marry a person of the opposite sex, the only exception is you can't marry a close relative. Same sex marriage is a misnomer, since by definition marriage is not same sex. Same sex union, partnership, etc would be Ok. To liberals, words/promises don't seem to matter.

Marriage should have nothing to do with our legal system. Conservatives think that govt should stay out of your personal business...period. I think everyone is entitled to getting a civil union and if they want marriage, do it at church.

I don't have a problem with it. It is mostly a generational thing. Older people can't accept it, younger people can. I'm a 33 year old conservative so its not a big deal to me. Most older liberals don't accept it either.

We don't. Just don't have a problem yourself with Religion that says same sex marriage is forbidden. You interpret the rules of life YOUR way and we'll do it ours.

The Pledge of Allegiance is nonsense. It's a tool of indoctrination.

So...what do we do next. Legalize bestiality because some group thinks THEY are being discriminated against? How about pedophilia? I mean we sure wouldn't want the ACLU coming after us because we didn't afford them the same rights that we gave to homosexuals and lesbians, do we?

I wouldn't expect a Liberal to understand anything about morality. It would just be nice if I could meet one that had an ounce of common sense.
