Can I tell them to leave my property?

A friend who lives around the corner from me said a city assessor stuck her head in her wood fenced yard and my friend asked if she could help her. The assessor started asking about the deck. (A deck that was on the house 12 years ago when they bought the house) My friend told her so and then told her to get lost. We know that municipalities are hurting for tax revenue. Do they have the right to come snooping in yards or requesting info about the inside improvements you may have done to your property? By the way our property values have dropped about 20% in the last two years.

They would probably been shot if they trespassed here in Texas.

Well, first of all, I wouldn't assume that assessors have that kind of free time on their hands. Cutbacks to budgets usually mean that people do less work, not more. I bet that one of your other neighbors or someone who doesn't like this particular neighbor sent an tip or something to the city.

Generally, though, they don't have the right to "snoop" on your property, but that would change if they had received some kind of tip or something.

I don't think you can tell them to get lost, I mean it's their job to evaluate your property every year.

I will tell you something that helps in discouraging them from popping up too often... A big dog.
