Yes equilibrium refers to the balance of particles-molecules or solutes or water on either side of the cell membrane. We have to qualify this by stating that the membrane has to be permeable to the particle that is to be considered in balance or equilibrium. Remember too, that the particles are always in motion so a better reference would be that the substance is in dynamic equilibrium on both sides of the membrane since the particles are free to move through the membrane then they will end up being in even concentration on both sides of the membrane.

Ok, I take chem 1 and 2 so we just went over this, equilibrium is when two substances are at a state of being balanced. When a substance *chemical, or organism* are at equilibrium they are balanced or in equal proportion. Take for example, if i combined equal amounts of hydrogen and chlorine they would form HCl (hydro chloric acid) at equilibrium. If I added to much hydrogen then there would be a nasty reaction and the two substances would no longer be situated at equilibrium. Hope that helps!

a static or dynamic state in which all forces or processes are in balance and there is no resultant change
chemistry state of balance in chemical reaction: the state in a reversible chemical reaction in which the reaction and its reverse reaction proceed at the same rate and balance each other so there is no further change
