I have a landline for non-voice use. Alarm etc. Can I use a non traditional phone service like Vonage?

Are there other companies? I pay about $30 a month with ATT. It seems ridiculous. Our main landline is with the cable company but they cant add this line since it is electric driven and the alarm needs to be on regardless of the electrical service. Any ideas? Would I save $$? Thanks!

Vonage and other VOIP services will not work with your alarm system. Change your service to a measured line. You only pay for outgoing calls and with an alarm those would be negligible. In Oregon it saves about $11 per month. Also make sure they don't have any features on the line, like some stupid package!

$30 for a circuit that you do not use to make outgoing calls, other than when the alarm system calls home sounds rather expensive...

is ATT the RBOC in your area (they own the outside telephone wiring?) if not, then you should sign up for service with the RBOC... then you need to get basic dial tone service... it should not cost more than $10/month plus taxes and fees.... you would be billed for every call made including local... but being it is a circuit for an alarm system it is not likely to have much usage at all...

this is the best option since POTS lines still work in the event of a power outage... many VoIP solutions will not work with data circuits, and even if you can get a comcast, or vonage line to communicate with your alarm system you would need to verify with your internet provider that the internet will still work in the event of a power outage on there end, and install a battery back up on your internet modem...

If you are not in a contract with your alarm system you can order the company that i use. They have alternative monitoring services and you do not need a phone line for the alarm to work. For more info on the company and ordering process, please view the below link:
