In English, Is ('s) optional?

i was wondering, it's normal to say something like Mary's house but even though it'd be a little weird, would it be INCCORECT if someone said the The house of Mary

Thanks in advance!!

No it's not incorrect. It's very formal but not incorrect.

Wouldn't be correct, but that's not common speech pattern for modern English. If you were to use it, you'd have to alter the words around it somewhat to make it 'fit'.

It'd be odd to say, "Yeah, i'm living at the house of Mary."

But, you could say "Yes, I dwell in the house of Mary."

It's not bad grammar. It's just bad style.

It's not wrong, but it sounds very strange.
